- G. HEMRz S TOVEPIPE FASTBNER;
Patented Apr. 24, 1894.
UITED STATES CLAUDE HEME, OF BAY OITY, MICHIGAN.
STOVEPIPE-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,692, dated April 24, 1 894.
' Application filedAugnst 29, 1893. Serial IRAS 1,304. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLAUDE HEME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Stovepipe- Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in stove-pipe fasteners.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device adapted to be readily and conveniently applied tothe ordinary stove-hole and capable of securely holding a stove-pipe therein.
in the accompanying drawings, and pointed outin the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stove-pipe fastener showing the same compressed preparatory to introducing it in the stove-hole. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the device applied to a stove-hole. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing the clamping device and the brace.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all thefigures of the drawlngs.
1designatesathimble,adaptedtobeinserted in the stove-hole of a chimney and provided at its inner end with an annular flange 2, adapted to engage the inner wall of a chimney3 to prevent the thimble from being withdrawn accidentally. The annular flange 2 is formed by splitting the metal of the thiinble at one end thereof at intervals a short distance and bending the cut portions or tongues outward, as shown; but a flange may be provided of other construction if desired. The thimble is split longitudinally and is adapted to be partially rolled or compressed, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, to
enable the flange 2 to be readily inserted in the stove-hole of a chimney; and after such insertion, the thimble expands to cause the annular flange 2 to engage the inner face of the front wall of the chimney. outer end 4 of the thimble is partially crimped or bent inward to enable the thimble to engage positively a stove-pipe and securely clamp the same; and it is held in such engagement by aclamping-screw orbolt 5, which engages perforated lips or flanges 6 of plates 7. The plates 7 are secured to the outer face of the thilnble at the outer end thereof; one of the plates is arranged at one of the longitudinal-edges of the thimble and the other plate is arranged a short distance from the other longitudinaledge to enable the longitudinal edges to lap over each other when it is necessary to contract, compress, or reduce the thimble to cause the same to clamp a stove-pipe. The bolt or screw is provided with a nut, and it also serves as the means for pivotingan inclined brace 8 to the thimble. The inclined brace has its lower, outer end given a quarter-turn or bend and is arranged between the loops or flanges of the plates. The upper end of the inclined brace 8 is arranged at right angles to the lower end, and engages the chimney and prevents the thiinble from moving inward.
It will be readily apparent that the stovepipe fastener is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction; that it is adapted to be readily inserted in the stove-hole of a chimney; and that it is capable of securely clamping a stove-pipe. It will further be seen that the device may when desired be readily removed from the stove-hole without inconvenience to the operator and withoutliability of impairing the future usefulness of the device.
Ohangesin the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. A stove pipe fastener comprising a thinlble split longitudinally and adapted to be par tially rolled and compressed, and provided at its inner end with an outwardly extending annular flange adapted to engage positively the inner face of a chimney, and a fastening de- IOO The front or vice arranged adjacent to the outer end of the thimlole and securing the longitudinal edges thereof together or holding the thimble in engagement with a stove pipe, said fastening device being arranged to engage the outer face of achimney, substantially as described.
2. A stove-pipe fastener comprising a thilnble split longitudinally and adapted to be partially rolled to enable it to be readily reduced in size for insertion into the stove-hole of a chimney, and provided at its inner end with an outwardly extending annular flange, plates arranged adjacent to the longitudinal edges of the thimble and provided at their adjacent ends with outwardly extending perforated fianges,a screw engaging said flanges andconnecting the plates, and an inclined brace mounted on the screw and arranged between the flanges of said plates and adapted to engage the outer face of a chimney to prevent In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Ihave hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
' CLAUDE HEME.
