TRUNK-TRAY.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,475, dated November 22, 1892.

Be it known that I, ARTHUR CLIFTON Jon- DAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emporia, in the county of Greensville and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Trunk-Tray, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trunk-trays; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts of the same, which willbe hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to provide a swinging trunk-tray havingthe friction of movement thereof reduced by the application of rollers to the adjacent portions of the trunkbody, and thereby avoid lifting the tray, the parts being simple and effective, strong and durable, and easily operated.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of the trunk, having alid 2, said parts being of any preferred form of construction and material. In one corner of the body of the trun k is located a post 3, which is securely fastened in vertical position and has an opening 4 in the upper end thereof extendingdownward partially therethrough. At the opposite side of the trunk-body is an inward projection 5, which forms a rest or support for the tray when in position in the body of the trunk, and at the front of the said trunkbody, at the upper edge thereof, is mounted a series of rollers 6, on which the tray is adapted to hear when being moved or swung horizontally over the top of the body of the trunk, to thereby render the movement of the same easy and to reduce the friction between the parts. The tray 7 is of any preferred form of construction and has a metal casting 8 secured to one corner thereof and extending up over a portion of the rear side of the same, the said casting 8 having a depending rod 9, which is adapted to be fitted in the opening4 of the corner-post 3, and thereby form a pintle or turning center for the tray. The said casting 8 is also formed with divergentarms 10, which are secured to the bottom of the tray and prov vides a rigid fastening or mounting of the said casting against the strain which is brought to bear thereon. To the bottom of the tray 7, at a suitable point, is fixed a stop 11, which depends therefrom and is adapted to strike against the side or end of the trunk-body, as shown in Fig. 1. By means of the construction set forth a convenient and advantageous device is produced which will not increase the cost of the tray over and above an exceptionally-small advance and at the same time providing the said advantageous operation.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a device of the character set forth, the

combination of a trunk having a corner-post with an opening extending down thereinto and rollers in the upper front edge thereof only, and a tray having a metal casting secured to one corner thereof and upward over one side of the same and provided with a depending post or rod pivotally and removably mounted in the aforesaid corner-post, said tray having a stop depending from the bottom thereof at a distance from the said casting, adapted to contact with one end of the trunk, said tray thereby having a swinging movement horizontally over the top of the body of the trunk and contacting with thelaforesaid rollers, substantially as described.
