Description

0.3. MAUGHAM. Carriage WheeLGuard.
v No. 20:,545. Patented March 19, I878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. MAUGHAM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE -WHEEL GUARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,545, dated March 19, 1878 application filed December 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. MAUGHAM, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage- Wheel Guards, of which the following is a specification vThe object of my invention is to provide a cheap and effective device for application to the wheel of a carriage with the view of preventing the soiling of the garments of ersons entering or leaving the carriage-en object which I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a carriage, illustrating the application of my invention; Fig.
2, asectional view of the shield, and Fig. 3 a
perspective view of the same.
Ordinary wheel-guards, such as are fastened to the body of the carriage, are objectionable, owing to the fact that they are necessarily located at some distance from the rim of the wheel, and do not prevent the contact with the side of the rim of the garments of persons entering or leaving the carriage. Attempts have been made to overcome this difficulty by the use of a detachable segmental plate applied directly to the rim of the wheel, and held in place thereon by spring-clips; but this is also objectionable for the same reason. These objections I overcome by the use of a shield consisting of a curved plate, a, with segmental side plates 12, the shield being hinged to a foot, d, which is preferably roughened on the under side.
In applying this shield to the wheel its foot is allowed to rest upon the ground, its upper end bearing against the rim of the wheel, as shown in Fig. 1, so that it will effectually prevent the contactlof the garments therewith.
The shield may be readily and cheaply made, either of wood, sheet metal, wicker-work, or other suitable material, and when not in use may be carried without difficulty on the drivers or footmans box.
Without claiming, broadly, a detachable shield to be applied to carriage-wheels,
I claim as my invention- The within-described portable shield for carriage-wheels, said shield consisting of a curved plate, a, and segmental side plates b, the whole being arranged for application to a wheel, and being provided at the bottom with a supporting and steadying foot, d, all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
and R. MAUGHAM.
Witnesses:
RICHARD L. GARDINER, HARRY SMITH.
