Description

1%.791343. PATBNTED MAY 30, 1905.

a M. HOLTMAN.

SLEIGH RUNNER FOR WHEELED VEHICLES.

APPLICATION FILED PEB.20,1905.

UNITED STATES Patented May 30, 1905.

PATENT OFFICE.

SLElGH-RUNNER FOR WHEELED VEHICLES.

SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 791,343, dated May 30, 1905.

Application filed February 20, 1905- serial No. 246,388.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN HOLTMAN, of E1- lis, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented'certain new and use ful Improvements in Vehicle Sleigh-Runners; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had. to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improve- "ments in sleigh-runners whichare adapted from their construction to be secured to vehicle-wheels.

The object of the invention is to provide a sleigh-runner of simple and durable construction which may be removably secured to the struction of the runner adapted for use on a pair of wheels.

Similar characters'of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.

In carrying this invention into practice I construct a runner 5 of any suitable material, having the curved ends 6 and 7, approximately midway between which I form the recess 8 in the upper portion of the runner, and at the end portions of the recess I form a longitudinal slot 9, enlarged, as indicated at 10, Fig. 3, at the under side of the runner, this enlargement 10 being closed by the metallic shoe 11, secured to the under side of the runner 5 in any ordinary manner and having screwthreaded perforations, as 12 12, Fig. 2. Mounted to slide in the recess-8 are the chockblocks 13 13, having grooved upper portions adapted to receive the tread of the wheel, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Each of these blocks 13 is perforated to receive a bolt 14, the head 15 of which is movable in the enlargement 10 of the slot 9 to permit the adjustment of said blocks 13 to receive a wheel, these blocks being secured in the adjusted position by screwing the nuts 16 on the bolts 14:, whereby the heads 15 of the bolts are drawn against the wall of the enlargement 10 of the slot 9. v

The runners 5 are secured to the vehiclewheels, as A, by means of the straps 17 17 adapted to fit over the inner surface of the wheel-rim, as shown in Fig. 2, and having perforated ends through which pass bolts 18 18, having solid heads and screw-threaded ends, these bolts being screwed down through perforations in the runner 5 and into the threaded perforations 12 12 of the shoe 11.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4 I have shown the runner 5 lengthened sufficiently to receive two wheels A A of a light'vehicle, and I have provided this lengthened runner with two pairs of the chock-blocks 13 13, the construction and combination of the parts being similar to that shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. By this construction I secure a sleigh runner adapted to be firmly secured in place on a vehicle-wheel and to be readily removed therefrom when desired, while the runner is adapted, by means of the blocks 13 13, for use on wheels of diflferent sizes.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t 1. A sleigh-runner adapted to be removably secured to a vehicle-wheel and comprising a runner having a longitudinal recess in its upper surface, a shoe for the runner having screwthreaded perforations, chock-blocks adjustable in said recess, means for securing said blocks in position, and wheel-securing means consisting of a strap adapted to fit the wheelrim and having end perforations and a pair of bolts extending through said perforations of the strap and secured in the threaded perforations of the runner-shoe, as described.

2. The combination with the runner 5 having the recess 8 and the slot 9, and provided with the shoe 11, of the blocks 13 13 adjustable in the recess 8, the bolts 14 carried by said blocks 13 and having the heads 15 working in the enlargement 10 of said slot 9, the i In testimony WhereofI afiix my signature in nuts 16 for drawing said bolts to secure the presence of tWo Witnesses. same, the straps 17 and the bolts 18 18 ex- V V T tending through the perforations of said straps MARHN HOL'L 5 and secured in the threaded perforations 12 12 Witnesses:

of the shoe 11, as and for the purpose de- HENRY J. MILLER, scribed.
