FOLDING PICTURE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,216, dated November 15, 1892 Application filed June 11, 1892. Serial No. 436,331. (No model.)

To on whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT OPERTI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Pictures, of which the following-is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved folding picture which can be readily opened, so as to represent a different design, such as a bill of fare, a picture, or other suitable device; and the invention consists of a folding picture composed of a foundation that is arranged to be folded on its median line and an interior layer, a portion of which is attached to each half of the foundation, while a remaining unattached portion or portions are adapted to be folded like a gusset or gussets to the inside of the foundation, while these unattached portion or portions extend beyond the foundation when the latter is opened.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved folding picture, showing the same in closed position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the same in open position. Fig. 3 is an end View of the folding picture as folded. Fig. 4is avertical longitudinal section on line 4 4:, Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawings, a represents the foundation of my improved folding picture, which foundation is preferably made of stout paper, card-board, or other suitable material and folded along its median line, so that one half of the foundation overlaps the other half, as shown in Fig. 1. To the inside of the foundation a is applied a thinner sheet or layer 17, which is partly attached to the inner surface of each half of the foundation a, while the remaining portion or portions located at one side or at opposite sides of the inner sheet I) are not attached to the foundation a, but are so arranged as to form a folding gusset d at one orboth sides of the same, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. This is obtained by arranging the connection between the foundation 0, and interior sheet on oblique lines which extend from points near the outer corners of the foundation 0. to points on the median line that are at a greater distance from the sides of the foundation. The folding gussets 01 may be made in any suitable shape, according to the design to be produced on the inner sheet b. The contours of the same may be made in plain or fancy shapes and extending beyond the outlines of the foundation when the latter is in open position, as shown in Fig. 2, while they fold toward the inside of the foundation when the same is folded up, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. The outer surface of the folding picture may be arranged in one design and the inside in another design, according to the purpose for which my folding picture is to be adapted. The outside may be finished by means of lithographing, so as to represent either a pocket-book, oyster, or

other suitable article, while the inside may bearranged in any other manner in the nature of a program, bill of fare, calendar, campaignportrait, or other suitable design. In all cases the gussets fold to the inside of the foundation and are entirely covered by the same when it is folded up, but extend to the outside of the same in one plane with the foundation when the same is in entirely-open position, so that the two halves of the founda tion are in one plane.

My improved folding picture can for a large variety of designs, and forms thereby a neat and inexpensive device for ad vertising and other-purposes.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Y 1. A folding picture composed of afoundation folded at its median line and an interior layer that is attached in part to both halves of the foundation and provided with a folding unattached side portion or gusset that is adapted to fold to the inside of the foundation when the "same is folded up or extended beyond the foundation when the same is opened, substantially as set forth.
