SHIRT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,504, dated August 23, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ARTHUR MEYERE, a citizen of France, and a resident of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckbands of Shirts; and I do hereby declare that thefollowin g is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in neckbands of shirts and to other wearing-apparel, and has especial reference to the buttonhole for the collar-button both on open-front and open-back shirts.

The object of the invention is to provide the neckband with a protecting inner portion of the cloth, so that the base of the button will be covered thereby and be prevented from coming into direct contact with the neck of the wearer, and, furthermore, to so form the neckband to provide for this protection to the neck as to permit the button to be readily inserted in the neckband without the slightest inconvenience.

The invention consists in the neckband having two overlapping flaps or flies on the outer portion thereof and preferably at the rear, having an intervening space between the same, each of which is provided with a buttonhole, and when the flaps are brought into their overlapping position and the button inserted they will be so held and the neck of the wearer be protected by the inner backing of the cloth.

The invention also consists in certain novel features in the arrangement and construction of parts, all as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, in which my invention is fully illustrated, Figure 1 is a rear view of my improved neckband,showing the buttonhole-flaps in an open position. Fig. 2 is also a rear View, the flaps being folded over into their closed position, with the collar-button in place. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a shirt provided with my improved neckband.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A indicates the neck-band, which is of the class that are opened in the front and closed at the back. This band is preferably formed of doubled thickness of cloth, but independent the one from the other. The inner strip Bis of one unbroken piece, while the outer portion of the band is formed of two strips C and O, which are stitched to the inner band B in such a manner as to leave at the rear two overlapping flaps D and D. These flaps are provided with the buttonholes E, so that when they are folded down the holes will correspond. The collar-button F is first inserted in one of the flaps while in an open position and the other flap then buttoned on.

It will be seen by the above description that the difficulty which attaches to devices having this same object in view in the manner of applying the button to a newly-laundered shirt by reason of the inner and outer portions of the neckband being ironed together is obviated, as the flaps in the present invention would be ironed out and left free, so that the operation of applying the button will be an easy task.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A shirt having the neckband provided with two independent flaps secured on the outer portion thereof, adapted to be folded back on the neckband and to form when so folded an intervening space between the flaps, the said flaps being provided with registering buttonholes and adapted to be folded one on the other in the direction of the length of said neckband, substantially as described.

2. A shirt having the neckband formed of the inner strip B and the outer strips 0 and G',having their inner ends D and D left free to form overlapping flaps, the said flaps having registering buttonholes on their ends and adapted to be folded back in opposite directions, substantially as described.
