Description

UNITED STATES A,PATENT OEEIcE.
JOHN E. SMITH, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND HENRY C. GRIGGS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVED BUCKLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 48,135, dated June 6, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J oHN E. SMITH, of the city of Waterbury, in the county of N ew Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement iu Buckles or Clasps as a new article of manufacture; and I do' hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction character, and operation of the same, reference beinghad to theaccompanyingdrawings, which make part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is aperspective view of the buckle with the straps as it will appean when in use. Fig. 2 is aperspective view of the same turned bottom or reverse side upward. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the under side of the buckle-frame, showing its cross-bar and projections or lugs on which the vibrating end of the pinching lever or tongue. rests. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the reversel side of the lever or tongue which pinches the stra-p, with the loop or eye parts of the hinge partially turned. Fig. 5 is a perspective View ofthe hook or vibrating part ofthe buckle, to which the standing part of the strap is to be attached. p
I make the frame a ofthe buckle or clasp of the shape or form shown on the reverse side in Fig. 3, and as indicated in Figs. l and 2, of sheet metal, by cutting or swaging, leaving a bar, as b, Fig. 3, extending from side to side ofthe frame, which serves as the stationary part of the hinge for each of the two vibratory parts, Figs. 4 and 5, as shown at o c and d, Fig. 2, which bar b is swaged or set down to the position indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, to render it convenient; and I also leave two projections or ears swaged or set down to the position indicated at e e, Figs. 2 and 3, to serve as rests or supports to sustain the 'lever or tongue g, Figs. 2 and 4, when itis drawn down by the running part oi' the strap B, as indicated in Fig. 2.
I make the tongue or pinching-lever g of sheet metal by cutting or swaging it .into the shape or form shown in Figs. 4 and 2, and at the two sides or corners I turn up two strips, as shown at c c, Fig. 4, of suitable length and width to form the eyes or movable parts of the joint or hinge on which the tongue g vibrates when the buckle or clasp is in use, as indicated at c o, Fig. 2.
I make the anchor-shaped vibrating hook h of sheet metal by cutting or' swaging it into the shape or form shown in Fig. 5, and indicated at d and h, Fig. 2, so as to render it suitable to be hooked into a slitted eye in the standing part of the strap A, as shown at h, Fig. 2, and indicated at h, Fig. l, with the inner end turned up similar to c c, Fig. 4, preparatory to forming the eye or movable part.
of the joint or hinge on which it vibrates, as at d, Fig. 2.
Having made the three several parts as above described, I place the tongue, Fig. 4, in the frame, Fig. 3, and pass the bent strips c c around the bar b, and set or closetbem down to form the eye part of the. joint or hinge on which the tongue gis to vibrate, and I place the anchor-shaped hook, Fig. 5, in the frame, Fig. 3, pass its loop d around the central part of the bar b, and close down the loop to form the. eye or movable part of the joint or hinge on which the hook is vto vibrate, when the buckle or clasp will be ready for sale or use, and when used with the straps, as A and B, it'will appear on the reverse side, as shown or indicated in Fig. 2, and'on the obverse side, (the way it will be seen when in use,) as shown or indicated in Fig. 1. I
What l claim as my invention, auddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the frame ct with the tongue g and the hook h, when the tongue and hook vibrate separately and on independent hinges orjoints, though on the same bar, as
as herein described and set forth.
JOHN E. SMITH.
