NiTan STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
JOHN BAVIER, OF NEWARK, NEW IJERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Speeication forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,326, dated February 14,1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J oHN BAVIER. of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have made certain Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being herein had to the drawings that accompany this specification, and which make part of the same.
rhe nature ot' my improvement consists in having the tongue or tongues ot' a buckle operate outside the buckle at its extremities.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plain buckle, Fig. 2 is an ornamental buckle, with its straps. Fig. 3 shows a tongue. Fig. 4 showsthe top plate of the buckle as it is constructed to act as a spring.
In constructing the buckle, the end of the frame is like ordinary buckles, in being the bar for the tongue, but instead of the tongue being in and under, it turns out, and holds the strap between the tongue and the edge of the top plate, as shown in Fig. 1. The top plate is held to the frame by about one-third of its length. Each end beingclear of the frame and being slightly elastic, admits of varied thickness in straps, it holding thick or thin alike tight. This is shown at Fig. 4.
The buckle, being alike'at its ends, can be adjusted to any desired position after the straps are fast to a garter or shoe, or by turning one tongue'back it can be made stationary at that end.
What 1 claim, and desire to secure, is-
A buckle with a tongue or tongues that operate by turning outward at the ends ofthe buckle, constructed substantially as shown.
