Description

(No Model W S MARSHALL SADDLE BAG AND HAND CASE.
No. 476,545. Patented June 7, 1892.
IIVVEIVTOI? ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WINFIELD SCOTT MARSHALL, OF CENTRALIA, ILLINOIS.
SADDLE-BAGS AND HAN D-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,545, dated June '7, 1892.
Application filed March 26, 1891. Serial No. 386,492. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WINFIELD SCOTT MAR- SHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centralia, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Saddle-Bags and Hand-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combination saddle-bags and hand-case designed specially for the use of physicians; and its object is, primarily, to provide a convenient handle device whereby the two sections or boxes of the device may be carried by a single handle.
The invention consists in the combination, with two independent boxes or cases, of a divided or bifuroated handle adapted for attachment to both boxes, as will be hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved saddle-bags and handcase, the parts being in position as a handcase. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
The two boxes 01' cases are indicated by the numerals 1 and 2 and are connected by a strap 3, one end of which is attached in any preferred manner to each of the said boxes.
4 indicates a handle, the ends of which are split, bifurcated, or divided to form securingears 5 and 6. The cars or ends 5 are permanently secured by rivets to the box 1 or to a portion of the strap 3 adjacent thereto, and the other cars 6 are formed with slits 7, adapted to take over catches, buttons, lugs, or other securing devices 8, projecting from the case 2. The boxes 1 and 2 may or may not be provided with end-securing catches 9.
The operation and utility of my improvement are obvious from the drawings and the foregoing description. Then the device is intended for use as saddle-bags, the ears 6 are disconnected from the fastenings 8 to allow the boxes to be separated, and when it is desired to form a hand-case the boxes are placed together back to back, the strap 3 being folded between them,as shown, and the ears or ends 6 of the handle are engaged with their fastenings S.
I do not restrict myself to any special mode of attaching the handle to the case 1, but desire to include all constructions of handle that may be included within the terms of the fol lowing claim.
In a saddle-bags and hand-ease, two boxes connected by a strap and adapted to be placed together back to back, in combination with a handle the ends of which are divided and secured permanently to one box and adapted to engage fastenings on the other box, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
XVINFIELD SCOTT MARSHALL.
