Be it known that I, WILLTAM BAooN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cottonport, in the parish of Avoyelles and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to hat-fasteners, and is more particularly a device adapted to be secured within a ladys hat and which is provided with means invisible from the outside for engaging the hair and securing the hat in position thereon.
The invention consists of oppositely-disposed series of prongs which are normally held apart by resilient devices and which are adapted to be drawn together by means of operating-rods extending through the sides of the hat. Means are employed for locking the prongs in position within the hair. The invention also consists of the further novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view ofla hat containing my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the fastener detached, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the operating-rods.
Referring to the iigures by numerals of reference, I and Qare parallel bow-springs having ears 8, and on which are secured crossrods 4, having inwardly-extending prongs 5 thereon. A centrally-disposed bracing-strip 6 is arranged between and parallel with springs 1 and has an aperture 7 adjacent each end, in which are slidably mounted rods 8. These rods extend in opposite directions and are secured to the central portions of the cross-rods 4. Notches 9 are provided within the rods for a portion of theirlengths and are adapted to engage the edges of the apertures 7. The rods 8 extend through opposite sides of the crown of the hat in which the attachment is located, and the outer ends thereof may be provided with suitably-ornamented heads 10. Those portions of the rods located between the notches and the cross-rods 4 are bent or curved so as to extend over the hair when the hat is in position thereon. Coiled springsll connect the ends of the springs I and 2 for the purpose of assisting in the operation of drawing the rods 4 toward each other.
It will be understood that the rods 4 are normally spaced apart, so as to assume positions within opposite portions of the crown of the hat. After the hat has been placed upon the head the ro'ds 8 are drawn outward in opposite directions, so as to bend the springs 1 and 2 and pull the prongs 5 together. These prongs will enter the hair and can be locked in such position by placing the notches 9 in engagement with the edges of the apertures 7. It will be seen that this fastener can be readily fastened within the hat and will secure the same tightly in position. The same can readily be disengaged from the hair by releasing the rods 8 and permitting the prongs to move apart.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
` The combination with an intermediate holding-strip and oppositely -disposed springstrips; of series of prongs connecting the spring-strips, spring connections between the ends of the spring-strips, notched rods connected to the series of prongs and extending in opposite directions therefrom, said rods being slidably mounted Within, and adapted to engage the edges of, apertures within the holding-strip.
