COMBINED BUCKET BAIL AND LID FASTENER. No. 410,044. Patented Aug. 27, 1889 @wdw I, A 70%; 7223:)? a dZ erZEz'aZ I 2W 7 vided with our improvements.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MARION srnKns AND OLIVER PHILLIP, REID, OF LAREDO, TEXAS.
COMBINED BUCKET-BAIL AND LlD-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,044, dated August 27, 1889.
Application filed June 22, 1889- $erial No. 315,186. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN MARION STUKES and OLIVER PHILLIP REID, citizens of the United States, residing at Laredo,in the county of Webb and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bucket Bail and Lid Fastener; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, referencebeing had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined bucketbails and lid-fasteners; and it has for itsobjectto provide a device by means of which the cover to the pail may be firmly held in place through connection with the bail, so that the parts are not in danger of becoming lost.
The invention consists in the peculiar combinations and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pail pro- Fig. 2 is a like View of one of the ears and its attached parts, part of the ear being broken away to better disclose the other parts.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a bucket or pail of any known construction, except as hereinafter specified, and provided with a removable cover B.
C are the ears, formed each preferably of a single piece of metal bent into the form shownthat is, with a flat portion a to bear against and be attached to the side of the bucket, the parallel sides I) with a space between them, and with a stud or projection c in the space between the two sides 12, which stud or projection may be formed by punching in the metal ofone of said sides; or itmay be a pin passed through a hole therein, the
manner in which this stud is formed or attached to the ear being immaterial.
D is a Wire formed at each end with an eye, one of which is loosely sleeved on the stud c, which may pass through from side to side of the ear, if preferred,so that said wire will work in the space between the sides b. The other eye on this wire receives the link E, and the other ends of the two links are connected by means of the wire F, slightly convexed, as shown, to conform to the curvature of the cover of the bucket. This wire F is connected with the links by means of the eyes formed on the ends of the wire.
G is the bail, formed at its ends with eyes engaging the eyes on the ends of the wire F, as shown.
By this construction the one set of cars serve both to hold the lid on and for the bail, and the parts are all so connected as to allow easy movement in securing or releasing the cover, and by being all so connected together none of the parts are liable to become detach ed and lost. I
The mode of operating the device will be readily-understood. With the parts as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the cover is locked in position. When itis desired to remove the same, it is only necessary to press the lower end of either of the wires D outward with the finger, when it will readily loosen itself and the wire F, the parts then assuming the position in which they are indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
To look the cover, push the wires D downward between the sides I) of the ears and the other'parts will follow and assume their proper positions, the links straddling the ears, as shown in the drawings, and serving to prevent lateral movement of the parts.
WVhat we claim as new is 1. The combination, with the bucket and the ears, of the wires D, pivot-ally connected to said ears, the links pivotally connected to said wires, the cross-wire F, connecting the said links, and the bail loosely connected with the ends of the said wire F, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the bucket and its cover, of the ears on the bucket, the wires D, having eyes pivotally connected with the have hereunto subscribed our names. in the ears, the links pivotally connected With the presence of two Witnesses. v wires, the cross locking-wire F, having eyes T n 7 at its ends engaging the links, and the bail $5??? 5 5 having; at its ends eyes connected with the J J eyes of the cross-Wire F, substantially as shown WVitnesses: and described, and for the purpose specified. WV. D. LAIN;
In testimony that We claim the above We E. BONELL.
