Description
W. H. WHEELER.
WAGON GLEAT. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 9, 1908.
937,669. Patented Oct. 19, 1909. v
W1 TNESSES :QFIQE WILLIAM.H. WHEELER, 0]? PRESCOTT, IOVTA.
WAGON-CLEAI.
Application filed June 9, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prescott, in the county of Adams and State of Iowa, havev invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVagon-Cleats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wagon cleats and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character whereby a sideboard may be held in a desired position with relation to the wagon body.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character wherein the cleat proper is engaged by a springpressed latch.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character which will be simple in construction, efficient and advantageous in practice and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists of the details of construction and in the novel arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which,
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a wagon body showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective, detached, of the bracket and spring latch employed in connection with the invention, and, Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the cleat proper.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a wagon body and 2 a sideboard. To the sideboard adjacent each end thereof is secured an end portion of the cleat 3, said cleat being approximately T shaped in cross section, the head of the T being secured to the sideboard 2 through the medium of the bolts t or other Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Serial No. 437,551.
fastening means. To the side of the body 1 are secured the brackets 5 of substantially the same general cross-section as said cleat, there being a bracket for each of the cleats. Each bracket has its base portion stepped laterally each way from the socket 5 of the central stem portion 5 thereof, thus providing for receiving the base portion of the cleat 3, said socket receiving the stem portion of the cleat also each bracket is provided at one end with an outstanding perforated ear 6 through which passes the latch 7. The stem of the cleat is provided at predetermined points with perforations 8 and these perforations are adapted to be engaged by the latches 7 to hold the sideboard 2 in proper position with relation to the body 1, the socket-equipped stem 5 of each bracket also having the walls of the socket provided with registering openings for the passage therethrough of the latch. In the present instance these perforations 8 are shown as but two but they may however, be of any desired number. The latches 7 are held normally in engagement with the cleats 3 through the medium of the expansion coil springs 9 embracing the latches 7 and illterposed between the ears 6 and collars 10 fixed to the latch. The collars 10 also limit the movement of the latches with respect to the brackets.
I claim:
A device of the character described, comprising a cleat of approximately T-shape in cross section, having its base portion adapted to receive fastenings for its attachment to the side boards of a vehicle body, and its stem portion provided with openings opening laterally therethrough at different points in its length, a bracket corresponding in general outline to that of the cross section of said cleat and having its base portion at each side of the stem, stepped laterally and its stem adapted to form a socket outstanding from the horizontal arms of said stepped portion, the walls of said socket being provided with registering openings coinciding with the aforesaid openings, one of said stepped portions having an outstanding perforated ear. with its opening also alining the aforesaid openings, the socket of the stem portion of said bracket receiving the stem portion of said cleat, and a springengaged latch extending through the openings of said bracket stem and said ear the spring of said latch being'arranged to de liver its pressure upon said latch for the retention of the latter in effective position.
two subscribing Witnesses.
