BACK-PAD TREE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THEODORE SEYB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richland, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Pad Trees, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harness, and particularly to that portion of harness known as back bands, and is designed to economize leather in the construction of the back pad and pad skirt.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a joint connection between the back pad tree and the pad skirt.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and pointed out in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a back pad tree constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the clip connection between the back pad tree and the pad skirt. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the connection between the terminals of the back pad tree and the clips or connections illustrated in Fig. 3.
The back pad tree and joint connection between the back pad tree and the pad skirt form the subject matter of the present invention.
The back pad tree comprises a continuous strip of metal made to fit over the back pad, when the back pad is bent to conform to the contour of the horses back. The terminals of the back pad tree or strip of metal are pierced by transversely arranged openings. A U-shaped member or clevis is mounted in the opening thus formed at each end of the pad tree through the instrumentality of a threaded rod piercing the terminals or arms of said U-shaped member and projecting through said openings. The curved portion of the clevis or U-shaped member is adapted to be engaged by aclip as will hereinafter be more fully described, for the pur- Speeification of Letters Patent.

Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates a strip of metal which constitutes the back pad tree, as illus trated in Fig. 2, made to fit over the back pad, when the back pad is bent to conform to the contour of the horses back. The convex portion 12 is raised to substantially the same plane as the outer surfaces of the beaded edges 11. The terminals 13 of the metal 10 are pierced by alined openings 14 to provide a means whereby the connections between the back pad tree and the skirt may be secured to the back pad tree.
The Ushaped member is connected to each opening 1 1 through the instrumentality of a threaded rod 16 which is screwed into the terminals of the arms of said; U-shaped member 15. It will clearly be seen from this construction, that the U-shaped member 15 is pivotally connected to the terminals 13 through the instrumentality of the rod 16 and is dependent therefrom and may assume any angle necessary to create a positive adjustment between the back band and the horses back.
The curved portion of the U-shaped member 15 is connected to a clip indicated generally as 17 and illustrated in detail in Fig. 3, said clip constituting a connection between the U-shaped member 15, and likewise to the back pad 'tree 10, and the tug bearers (not illustrated). This clip 17 constitutes a strip of metal bent upon itself as illustrated having the bent portion 18 thereof concave to conform with the curve of the U-shaped member 15. The terminals of the strip of metal forming the clip 17 are reduced as at 19 and are adapted to secure therebetween the terminals of the tug bearers.
