ROPE ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,894, dated August 13, 1889.

Be it known that I, JOHN SEYMOUR POWELL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Marshall, in the county of Harrison and State of Texas, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in Rope Attachments for Snap- Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a novel and useful device which is adapted to be rigidly and substantially secured to the end of a rope, and which is constructed with a curved lip on its protruding end, so that when pressed over the loop of a snap-hook it will form a link or jointed connection of the snap-hook with the rope, ferrule, or clamp, as will be fully understood from the following description and claim, taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a rope, showing my improved ferrule compressed thereon, the transverse lip of this ferrule being clinched. This figure also shows one of the well-known snap-hooks as it would appear if detached from the eye of the ferrule. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the ferrule before it is compressed on the end of a rope, and Fig. 3 is a top view of the device.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the three figures.

Before describing my invention I desire to state that I am aware that it is not new to construct a snap-hook with an elongated shank having lateral lips and teats for the purpose of compressing the shank-lips and teats into and about a rope, the said shank, the hook, the side lips, and the teat-s being cast integral. Therefore I disclaim such a device.

Referring to the annexed drawings, A designates a common rope, which may be made of hemp, wire, or of any other suitable material. One end of this rope is cut off short, and about this end I apply my improved ferrule, shield, or guard B, whichI prefer to make of malleable iron, although it may be made of any other suitable metal.

I represent in the annexed drawings a ferrule having a body a, lips I) b, teats or tapered bosses, spurs, or lugs c c,and a broad front extension E, which, with the said parts a, b, and c, are cast or formed integral. The said extension E is designed, when pressed into the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3, to receive the straight pintle portion (1 of a snap-hook (J, and when this portion is adjusted into place, as stated, and the lip is compressed as shown at d, Fig. 1, it forms a broad transverse eye or hinging portion for the snaphook. I thus compress and close the ends of the strands of a rope, firmly unite an eye to the rope, and adapt a rope-ferrule to have pivotally attached to it any Well-known snaphook.

I am aware that Letters Patent No. 59,890, dated November 20, 1866, shows a rope attachment for a snap-hook, formed of a single piece of metal having a cylindrical shank provided with spurs, and a tapered hook, round in cross-section, on one end. Such a device I broadly disclaim.

The essential feature of my invention consists, first, in a body having thin laterallytapered scalloped edges forming lips I); second, in a hooked extension, which is fully as broad as the body B when this body is com pressed and flattened upon a rope, the thin rounded lips I) embedding themselves into the rope strands, and thus materially aiding in holding the attachment upon the rope; third, in adapting the extension E to receive the elongated bar d of a snap-hook and to be compressed upon such bar, so as to form a long hinge-joint, which will prevent any 'lateral shackle movement of the snap-hook.
