IMPROVEMENT. IN HEMMlNG-GUIDES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,62%),-dated May 9, 1865.

To all whom it may concerns Be it known that 1, WILLIAM GAsKILI., of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Flemming-Guide for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speci- Iication.

My invenxion relates to a peculiar form of scroll, consisting of two elasticinterconvoluted plates axiallyconnected, so as to form a single piece, and having a pair ot' yielding wings for imparting to the edge of the cloth the double folds required for hemming.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hemmin g-guide and its accessories. Fig. 2 represents the guide with the stuifin position. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the guide from the delivery end thereof. Fig.4 represents the'saine with a portion of the outer scroll removed. Fig.5 is a transverse section ofthe scroll with the cloth inserted. Fig. 6 is an axiaiisection of the same. Y

My scrollconsists of a double volute or pair of intercoivoluted plates, A and B, united permanently together near the interior of the scroll, as shown in Fig. 5, so as to form a single piece, converging toward their delivery end in the manner shown `and extending on wings a and b co-operate to spread the cloth and to prevent it passing into the scroll in a crowded or puckered condition.

The convolotions of the scroll operate to impart to the edge of the fabric a double fold or tuckthat is to say, so that the edge of the goods is. directed toward the outer edge of the hem, as shown in Fig. 5, thus diifering from fellingscrolls, which consist of detached plates,` and act on two inter1ocking edges, each ot' which is only folded once, so as to direct the rough edge toward the inner or stitched margin of the hem. Slots d in the ange D enable the scroll to be adjusted properly with respect to the needle and the kind of goodsto be operated upon.
