Be it known that we, SIMIEON J. SCHNOR- ENBERG and GEORGE SIMPSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of TVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments for Making Dress-Facings5 and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to a sewing-machine attachment for the making of dress-facing. Dress-facing is a new article of manufacture, and is sold in the market by the yard, ready to be put around the bottom of ladies dresses, and is intended to take the place of binding formally used upon dresses. It consists of a strip of waterproof or other similar material folded or doubled together, to which is sewed another strip of analogous material, adapted to extend upwardly from the bottom beneath the skirt and to be attached thereto by blind stitching or otherwise.

Our invention consists, essentially, of a folder or doubler to fold or double the strip of waterproof material and guide it to the needle of the machine and a gage above the folder to guide the other strip of analogous material properly in relation to the folded strip, so that they may be sewed together in a proper manner, as will be hereinafter described and specifically claimed. The folded strip extends below the bottom of the dress and acts as a dress-protector. The strip that is sewed to the protector is the facing proper to the dress and may extend upwardly to any desired extent for the purpose of facing or stiffening the dress. The gage for the facing is separate from the folder and is adjustable laterally.

WVe have shown in the accompanying drawing a form of our invention employing an adjustable gage for the facing.

Our invention may be either right or left handed, accordingly as the folder and gage are attached to the connecting-plate.

The attaching-plate of the folder is se cured to the bed of the machine by the thumbscrew a, operating in the slot a in the same manner that sewing-machine attachments are usually connected and adjusted.

B is the folder, having an opening to receive the strip of material or braid from the spool, the opening operating to fold the material around the longitudinal projection in the folder B, thus folding the material or braid before it reaches the needle of the machine. The walls of the opening operate as a gage to guide the doubled strip properly to the needle. The facing-strip is fed from a spool and passes to the needle above the folded strip, as shown in the drawing, and is guided 7o thereto by the gage E.

In the illustration the gage E is adjustable by means of a thumb-screw a, so that it may be moved laterally to press against the edge of the facing-strip and properly guide it as it is drawn along, being fed to the machine.

Our device is particularly well adapted for I the purpose of folding soft material as well as material of a stiffer texture.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a sewing-machine attachment for producing dress-facing, the combination of a braid-doubling portion closed except at its ends, by a solid immovable wall, and an auxiliary gage Wholly exterior to said doubling portion and disconnected from the same and adapted to be adjusted with respect to the doubling portion on a line at right angles to the line of movement of the work, and a thumb-nut for holding the gage in a fixed position, substantially as described.
