Description

UNITED STATES PATENT @rrron.
EDWIN T. DOUGLASS, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK.
INDEXED BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,441, dated April 5, 1892.
Application filed October 16, 1888- Serial No. 288,217. (No model.)
To LtZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN T. DOUGLASS, a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indexing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in indexing books for memoranda; and the object sought is to enable the individual to observe a memorandum pertaining to a corresponding day for every calendar month in the year by one act of reference, all the indications of a greater denomination of time appearing simultaneously under the head of any one lesser denomination, the latter being used solely as the key of reference.
To this end my invention consists in a memorandum-book constructed as fully described herein, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an open book provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a slight modification in arrangement.
In Fig. 1 the bookis shown as having a marginal index arranged in the usual manner and bearing upon the successive tabs or offsets the numbers in their natural order from 1 to 31, inclusive, corresponding to the greatest number of days in a calendar month. By using the index the book may be opened to the page upon which any one of these numbers is placed, and upon this and the opposite page thus exposed the names of the cal= endar months are arranged in order, so as to divide the two pages into twelve equal spaces, each headed by the name of a month, as shown in Fig.1, where the book is opened to the page upon which the indexfigure l is placed. This being done for each of the numbers throughout the book, all entries for, as an example, the first of any month are written under the name of that month upon the two pages exposed by opening at the page upon which the figure 1 of the index is placed, and in like manner all entries for corresponding days of the twelve months are made upon a folio by themselves.
The space is in books of ordinary size sufficient for many brief memoranda of, for example, business or other engagements that it is desirable to call to mind upon a particular date; but if in any case the subject-matter be deemed insu'lficient the latter may be entered in its proper place to call the matter to mind, and additional notes may be placed upon one or more leaves intervening between this and the next succeding folio exposed by opening the book at the next number in the index.
In Fig. 2 there is shown the modification of placing only the first six months of the year upon the pages exposed in opening the book, as above set forth, the remainder of the names being placed upon following pages, collectively forming a group.
It is evident that with the use of but a single index the book may be readily opened to any date, and that it serves the purpose of the common daily memorandum-calendar for the desk, and at the same time is conveniently carried in the pocket when of medium size.
Having now fully shown and explained my invention, what I claim is 1. A diary or book provided with a single visible index bearing the lesser denomination of time and having repeated designations of the greater denomination of time within the book corresponding with each said lesser and visible denomination.
2. A memorandum-book provided with a single day-index visible when the book is closed and repeated month designations within the book, arranged in independent and complete series for each day-indication.
3. A book in which the month designations are invisible when the book is closed, having a single visible consecutive-number index corresponding to the days of the month, each number referring to pages or groups thereof within the book, subdivided by calendarmonth designations representing a complete year for each said page or group.
at. A book provided with a single marginal separate pages or groups of pages, and sul index bearing numbers corresponding to the divisions of each said page or group into days of the mouth, consecutively placed on spaces for memoranda designated by the I 5 the exposed portions of successive leaves or names of the twelve calendar months, for the 5 groups thereof, and the names of calendar purpose set forth.
months, each designating a space for memo- In testimony whereof I have signed this randa arranged Within said leaf or groups in specification in the presence of two subscribindependcnt series, pertaining to each single ing Witnesses.
index-number. l EDWIN T. DOUGLASS. 1o 5. A book provided with a single marginal lVitnesses:
reference index comprising substantially SCHUYLER DURYEE,
thirty-one numbers referring, respectively, to H. S. ROHRER.
