SOCIAL SECURITY PAY ROLL BOOK Filed March 28, 1938 Patented Oct. 1, 1940 UNITED STATES 2,216,633 I SOCIAL SECURITY PAY ROLL BOO-K Benjamin Steinberg, Philadelphia, and Otto H. Kaupp, Llanerch, Pa.
Application March 28, 1938, Serial No. 198,348
1 Claim. (01. 283-66) Under the Federal Social Security Act, reports must be filled quarterly; and under various State unemployment compensation laws, reports. must be filed in some cases quarterly and in other cases monthly. 7
The principal object of the present invention, therefore, is to provide a book which shall be compact, easy to balance, easy to keep, and in which complete information is readily available at all times.
Another object of the invention is to provide a book with which it is a simple matter to audit pay rolls.
Another object of the invention is to provide a book which eliminates posting and which can be balanced each week, and which will show all remuneration paid to employees at a glance.
A further object of the invention is to provide a book in which the names of the employees do not have to be written each week together with the amounts earned, and which eliminates the rewriting of names except quarterly, semi-annually or annually. In fact, where the labor turnover is not great, the names may be listed and not re-written for the entire year.
Other objects will appear from the following description at the end whereof the invention will be finally claimed.
Generally stated, the invention comprises, a book having a full leaf and a cut leaf presenting two confronting pages or a spread as it is sometimes called, said pages ruled in vertical columns for names, addresses, personal history, position, and details of employment; a series of groups of shingled leaves following the cut leaf, the confronting page of the cut leaf and the first page of the shingled leaves and the succeeding confronting pages of the shingled leaves columned to indicate pay and details of pay per month, each group covering a quarterly period, the last page at the end of the final group of shingled leaves being a full leaf and marginally ruled for yearly pay and other information, various of said-pages being simultaneously visible in horizontal direction.
The invention also comprises the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed. In the following description, reference will be made to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof and in which:
Fig. 1 is a view of a book embodying features of the invention and showing the same opened at the full leaf, which is the first page, and showing the succeeding leaves.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the first page of a group of shingled leaves in open position.
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view of the leaves viewed from one of their edges.
In the drawing and from the front to the back I of the book, i designates'a full leaf and 2 designates a cut leaf. These present two confronting pages as shown in Fig. 1. V
Page 1 is ruled in vertical columns and column a is intended to receive the names of employees. Column b receives the rateof wages. Column d receives the addresses. Columns e, f and g receive the date of birth, whether married or single, and when employed. Column 71. receives a description of the position or character of employment.
On page 2, column 2' receives a statement of the State in which the employee is employed. Column 70 receives the reason for termination of employment, and column 2 receives any necessary general remarks.
Referring to Fig. 2, leaf 2 has been turned over and the exposed page is ruled together with the confronting page to indicate in the first column m necessary memorandum, and in each of the succeeding columns n, o, p, q and 1" appears an appropriate legend for each of five weeks. The legend indicates the number of days employed, the hours worked, the gross pay roll, deductions if any, and the net pay roll for each week. Columns n to 1' are alike except that they relate to succeeding weeks in one month, say January.
Referring to Fig. 3, the succeeding leaves 4, 6 and 8 are shingled leaves and each of them is prepared to receive the legends relating to February, March and total for first quarter, such as have been described.
Leaf 8, which is the last of the series or groups A of shingled leaves, is ruled at its edge to provide for the total pay roll for the first quarter. The groups B, C and D are similar to group A and the groups are repeated so as to show four quarters.
The last leaf 26 of the final group is full width and is ruled to show the gross pay roll for the year as Well as the federal security or other number and also the date when employment was discontinued.
The leaves in groups A, B, C and D are arranged so that the pay roll for each three months may be combined into a quarterly total without turning of leaves or using working sheets.
From the foregoing description, it will be evident that, by properly opening the book and reading across the open pages and in line with the name of the employee, one can ascertain at a glance all information concerning the employee that is required by the Federal Social Security Act as well as by similar acts of various States. In fact, practically any information that may be required can be ascertained in a similar manner.
To those skilled in the art, it will be apparent that the described structure of the book greatly facilitates and simplifies the bookkeeping and the entries that have to be made in connection therewith. It is obvious that the described structure of the book makes possible the attainment of the advantages referred to and of other advantages in accounting.
Throughout this specification and claim, we in tend the following terms to have the following meaning:
Full-sized or full means a leaf of max mum length from the bound or gutter edge to the opposite or free edge.
Intermediate or cut means a leaf of less length from the bound or gutter edge to the free edge than a full leaf.
Shingled means a group of leaves of different length having one edge aligned so that portions of each leaf are exposed adjacent the opposite or free edge.
We claim: a
A social security pay roll book comprising: covers adapted to overlie the leaves; a binding connecting the leaves to said cover at one of the vertical edges of the leaves and allowing the book to open flat and leaving the opposite vertical edges of the leaves free; a full sized first leaf and a following intermediate cut leaf of less length, said leaves presenting two confronting pages, said pages being ruled with vertical lines to form a plurality of vertical columns including a relatively wide name column at the free vertical edge of said full leaf, a wage column adjacent said name column, and a general remark column at the free vertical edge of the opposite cut leaf, all of said columns being appropriately designated adjacent the top edges of the pages; a series of groups of shingled leaves following said cut leaf, each of said shingled leaves being of substantially different length from the others in the group and the longest of said shingled leaves being equal in length to said cut leaf, the confronting page of said cut leaf and the first page of said shingled leaves and the succeeding confronting pages of said shingled leaves being ruled with vertical lines to form a plurality of vertical date columns, each pair of confronting pages of said cut leaf and of said shingled leaves being arranged with only suflicient date columns to record an account of one month by weeks and a monthly total and a quarterly total, the last leaf of the final group of shingled leaves being a full leaf and ruled with vertical lines to form a vertical yearly total column adjacent the free vertical edge of said leaf, all of said columns being appropriately designated adjacent the top edges of the pages; various of said pages being simultaneously visible in a horizontal direction so that a monthly, quarterly, or yearly account can be easily ascertained by glancing at one of the end columns of said page; said leaves being also divided by horizontal linesto form individual account spaces extending continuously across all the faces of the pages throughout the length of said columns; and all said leaves having their free vertical edges terminating in a single, unbroken, straight line.
