CALENDAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,166, dated May 9, 1905.

Be it known that I, CHARLES N. MANFRED, a resident of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State oi' Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calendars;

` and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improved form of calendar arranged to cover a period of a century and to show either the day of the week for any date within the period it embraces or to indicate on what dates a certain day of the week will come in any specified month or year within the period of the calendar. While the period covered would ordinarily be a century, this period might be varied acl abit/am by slight modifications in the calendar, so that instead of a century it could be made for a greater or less period, either for one year, a decade, &c., or, on the other hand, the period could be increased to cover several centuries, if desired. By increasing the period indelinitely the calendar would be to allintents and purposes a perpetual calendar.

The form of the calendar is immaterial, as it can be made in the shape of an easel for desk use or of a hanging or wall calendar, or it can be made in pocket form or in shape of a card-index, &c. The calendar can also be combined with various varticlessueh as an inkstand, a pen-rack, a pocket memorandumbook, &c.#and parts of it can be arranged also for the display of advertising matter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is an assembled view of three index-cards. Fig. 3 is a similar'view of the other cards, and Fig. 4 is a view of a modification.

A represents the numbered cards, which' have a date for every day of the month, which dates are arranged in columns, as shown. As the irst day of the month may come on any week-day, it is essential that a set oi' cards be provided in Which the [irst day of the month is arranged to come on Sunday on one card, onl Monday on another card, on Tuesday on another, &c., so that by this arrangement seven cards are required to cover the seven days of the week. Each of these cards would bear a serial number or letter, as shown at 2, to distinguish it. As the greatest number of days in any month is thirty-one, a set of seven numbered cards containing thirty-one days each would be sufcient for all practical purposes. VhiIe a single set of such cards is suflicient, it is not recommended, Jfor the reason that in the case of a month containing less than thirty-one days-such as thirty days, for instance-there is a great liability to error in reading the dates at the end of the month, for the reason that unless it is understood and remembered that the month in question has only thirty daysit is quite likely that the numbered card would not be changed on the last day of the month, and the consequent reading of the date of the following day would be incorrect. For this reason it is recommended that at least one other set of numbered Ycards be supplied, which would be similar to numbers or letters would follow consecutively n through the four sets ot' cards. The proper numbered card to be used for any specified month in any specified year is indicated by means of an index. This index is arranged to show the different months and I5 years which the calendar is intended to cover,

and opposite each month of each year is given a serial number or letter corresponding to that of the proper numbered card to be used for the month of the year in question.

bearing the name of the month atthe top, as shown at 5. Below this is an itemized list of the years, as shown at 6, which the calendar is intended to cover, and opposite each of z 5 these, as shown at 7, is the serialfnumber or letter designating the proper numbered card to be used for that month in each year. By this arrangement the calendar can be instantly set for any month in any specified A reference or explanatory note may also be added, so that the manner of using the calendar is readily apparent.

By the arrangement shown the index for the month of January in each of the years covered by the calendar would be included on the index-card for the month of January, and the index for February in the same year would be placed in like manner on the card for February, &c. By printing the index on u 4o separate cards the period of the calendar could be increased considerably, as in that X case there would be unlimited space for the index data, and as a result this data could be made more complete than would otherwise be possible.

The index or monthly cards shown are made sufficiently longer than the numbered cards so that the name of the month which is printed at the top ot' the former will appear 'o above the top of the numbered cards when the index and numbered cards are assembled. The names of the days of the week 0r their f, abbreviations can also be placed on the inso as to allow both the name of the month and the names of the days of the week to appear above the numbered cards when the latter are placed in front of the index-cards.

Instead of the days of the week and the corresponding dates used in connection with them being arranged in vertical columns, as shown in Figsgxand 4, a horizontal arrangement can be adopted, if preferable.

If the calendar is to be used for advertising purposes, space can be provided on the franf in which the cards are held or on the cards.` themselves or on both lthe frame and cards for such advertising matter as is to be used. :.80

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 1 Patent, is-

1. In a calendar, the combination with a series of cards or sheets containing numerals indicating the days of months, of another series of cards or sheets each containing the name of a month, and also containing numerals indicating years and registering with said numerals, other numerals or characters each 9o corresponding with a numeral or character on one of the first-mentioned cards, indicating which oi" said First-mentioned cards should be used for the month and year desired.

2. In a calendar, the combination with a series of cards or sheets containing numerals indicating days of months, of another series of cards or sheets larger than the Erst-mentioned sheets and each containing the name of a month to be seen above the first-mentioned series of cards, and also containing numerals indicating years, and characters registering with the year-numerals and corresponding with characters on the first-mentioned series of cards to indicate which of said cards should be used for the month and year desired.

3. In a calendar, the combination of two series of cards or sheets, each card of one series containing the days of one month, and the cards ot' the other series indicating which of the first-mentioned series should be used for a given month and year.

4. In a calendar, the combination of two series of cards or sheets, one series shorter than the other to expose the names of months printed on the longer series, each of the shorter cards containing the days of one month, and serial characters and the longer cards containing in parallel columns, numeralsl indicating years and characters corresponding with the serial characters on the monthly cards.
