SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,031, dated March 1, 1892. Application led September 14, 1891. l Serial No. 405.643. (No model.)

To all whom, t may concern.'

Be it known that I, IsADoRE ALTMAN, aoitizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful 1mprovement in Garters, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists yof a garter rendered adjustable by means of a strap or piece of elastic material and a buckle, as will be hereinatter set forth and claimed.

Figures l and 2 represent perspective views of a garter embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section of a portion thereof. Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal section of a portion of a modification.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a garter, to one end of which are attached, respectively, the buckle B and one end of an elastic strip C, the other endof the latter being attached to or near to the end of the garter opposite to the buckle, said strip passing freely through the loop D of the buckle and forming a continuity of the garter. It will be seen that when the buckle is opened the strip C is released, after Which the size ot' the garter may be adjusted by drawing the strip in such manner as to bring the ends of the garter closer or farther apart, as the case may be. lVhen the adjustment is effected, the buckle is closed, the eiect of which is evident. A piece of elastic material is interposed between the buckle and adjacent end of the garterand secured to said parts, so as to ease the draft on said end, said loop in the present case being continuous of the strap. As the strip is elastic, the garter bears firmly on the stocking and sets easy and comfortable on the limb.

In Fig. 4 the buckle is connected with the garter opposite to that shown in Figs. l and 2, whereby the part E of the garter, which constitutes a guard, has the buckle always in front of it, the operation in other respects benig similar to that shown in the other igures. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. A garter consisting of a strap of inelastic material, having its ends united by an elastic strip, and a buckle movably connected With one end of the strap and Whose tongue e11- gages said elastic strip, said buckle also havving a loop which receives said strip, substantially as described.

2. A garter consisting of a strap of inelastic material, having itsl ends united by an elastic strip, and a buckle secured to the strap and engaging said strip, substautiallyas described.
