SUSPENDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 24, 1911.
Patented Dec. 5 1911.
Serial No. 640,059.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTINE HARVEY S'rrrns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeton, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in suspenders, and more particularly to an improved suspender designed for holding the diaper and stockings of a child, supporting the weight of the diaper and stockings upon the shoulders of the child, and dispensing with the necessity of pinning the diaper to the shirt.
A further object is to construct a "device of this kind which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonably low price, which may be adjusted to fit various sizes of children, and which is extremely simple in construction, and will effectually perform those functions for which, it is intended without discomfort to the child.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in front elevation illustrating my improvements on the body of the child. Fig. 2, is an enlarged plan view of the device. Fig. 3, is an enlarged view in longitudinal section through one end of the device. Fig. 4:, is a perspective view of one of the metal loops.
In constructing my improved suspender, I employ a shoulder piece 1 which is reduced at its ends and between its ends is of elliptical form having an elliptical opening 2 cut therein, so as to be positioned over the head of the child, while the main portion rests upon the shoulders as shown in Fig. 1.
The front and rear ends of this shoulder piece 1 are reduced forming straps 3, which are positioned through the slots 4: of metal loops 5, and by adjusting these straps in the loops, the length of the shoulderpiece may be varied to suit the'child.
It will be noted that the lower bar of the metal loop is longer than the other bars, and hence the lower slot is longer than the upper slot. In the end portions of these longer slots, flexible loops 6 on flexible tabs 7 are held. In other words, the tabs 7 which have pin receiving openings 8 therein have loops 6 sewed thereto which are positioned through the lower slots 4, and the greater length of these lower slots 4 allows the straps 3 to be projected therethrough between the loops 6 without crowding the latter as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
To the body piece 1, at its front and adjacent its lower end, elastic straps 9 are secured, and are provided with clasps 10 at their free ends for attachment to the stockings 11 of the child.
12, represents a diaper which is folded around the child in the ordinary manner, and the ends of the diaper at the front are secured by a safety pin 13 to the front tab 7 and a similar safety pin (not shown) is employed to connect back or rear tab 7 with the back of the diaper.
Clasps 10 are connected to the stockings, and hence the entire weight of the diaper and the stockings are supported on the shoulders of the child. This relieves the shirt from the strain, and overcomes the necessity for pinning the diaper to the shirt, which soon wears out the shirt. The length of the body piece may be adjusted by moving the straps 3 in the metal loops 5 without disturbing the tabs 7.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I v V described, comprising a body piece adapte to be sup ported on the shoulders of a child,"said body piece, having reduced ends forming straps,
metal loops having upper and lower slots through which said straps are projected,
said lower slots longer than the upper 'sl'ot's,
tabs, and loops on the tabs projected through the lower slots of the metal loops outside of the straps, substantially as described. I In testimony whereof I have signed my name tb this specification in the presence of 15 two subscribing Witnesses.
