ATTORNEY UNITED STATES ETENT OFFICE.
I JAMES E. DOOLITTLE, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO BIRDSEY, SOMEBS COMPANY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
CORSET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. DooLITTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of 5. Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to abdominal cor- T setsand/has for its object to provide a sim- 1o ple and inexpensively made stocking supporting corset of this character which shall be so constructed that the lines of pull of the stockingson the corset cross each other over the abdomen, the draw straps sliding freely 15,.over each other so that while the abdomen is held down firmly tension may be placed upon either draw strap without affecting the 1 other, thereby adding greatly to the comfort of the wearer in walking and in sitting down without in any way relieving the holding action upon the abdomen.
WVith these and other objects in view I 1 "have devised the novel corset of which the following description in connection with the accompanying drawing is a specification, 3 reference characters being used to indicate the several parts.
The drawing is a partial elevation of a I corset opened out to illustrate the construcgotion an operation of my novel improvement. A 10 denotes the front portions of the halves of a corset.
The special structure of the corset is wholly immaterial so far as the present invention is concerned.
The novel feature of the invention consists in downwardly and obliquely extending draw straps 11 and 12 which are attached at a distance back from the front edges of the halves of the corset and cross each other. One of the draw straps, in the present instance draw strap 12, is provided .1 with a loop 13 through which draw strap 11 4.5 slides freely, the strap 12 having reinforcing stays adjacent the ends of the loop 13, said stays extending parallel to the strap 11.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 20, 1910.
Application filed May 14, 1910. Serial No. 561,455.
14 denotes elastic supporters which are at tached to the lower ends of the draw stra s and are provided with clasps 15 for attac 1 ment to stockings.
Draw strap 11 is shown as attached to the right side of the corset, in the wearing position, and as extending downward obliquely toward the left, the clasp in use being attached to the left stocking, and draw strap 12 is shown as attached to the left side of the corset and its clasp in use is attached to the ri ht stocking.
1.6 denotes side supporters for the stockings, which, however, are not an essential feature of the present invention, which consists solely in the downwardly and obliquely extending draw straps which have a sliding connection with each other and have stocking supporters attached thereto.
In use, the pull upon either of the draw straps may be relieved and the abdomen will still be held down by the other strap. In walking or in sitting down, the sliding movement of the draw straps over each other gives the greatest possible ease and comfort to the wearer without defeating the essential purpose of the corset.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
The combination with the halves of a corset, of downwardly and obliquely extending draw straps which are attached to the halves back from their front edges, one of said draw straps being provided with a loop through which the other slides and reinforcing stays secured at the ends of said loop and extending parallel to the other strap and both of said straps being provided with supporters for attachment to stockings on the side opposite to the point of attachment to the corset.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES E. DOOLITTLE.
