SHELF-BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,479; dated January 5, 1892 Application filed May 12, 1891. Serial No. 392,470. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. WINOHEs- TER, of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shelf-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in that class of boxes that are used to contain shoes, stockings, and other articles, such as are placed upon shelves in retail stores to be sold from and which are piled one above another with their labeled ends facing the view; and it consists in the particular construction of box hereinafter described, and specified in the claim.

Accompanying this specification to form a part of it is a sheet of drawings containing three figures illustrating my invention, with the same designation of parts by letter reference used in all of them.

Of these illustrations, Figure 1 is a perspective of a box containing my invention with the same closed up. Fig. 2 is another perspective with the box shown as opened at the end, and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line as a: of Fig. 1.

The several parts of the box thus illustrated are designated by letter reference, and the function of the parts is described as follows:

The letter B designates an open-top box, made with the rectilinear sides S, ends E and E the top proper T, and the bottom E the permanently-closed end E being indicated by the dotted line d in Fig. 2. The end E is hinged to the front end 6 of the bottom B at H and free from the sides, so that this end can be turned up or down on this hinged connection, as shown at Figs. 1 and 2.

The letter T designates the cover part of the top, which at H is hinged to the front edge e of the top proper, and this cover part T is made with a turned-down front edge or flange t and turned-down side edges or flanges i said flanges being adapted to surround the. end of the box and hold the hinged end E in closed position. As thus made, the cover top part T can be turned up and the front end E swung down for access to the box interior, as shown at Fig. 2, and when the end E is turned up and the cover part T turned down the end E is held in position by the turn-down front edge i and the turn-down side edges t t of the top, with the parts appearing as at Fig. 1. Thusit will be seen that I provide an open-top box with a removable flanged cover consisting of two sections TT Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

A shelf-box consisting of a rectangular open- .top box having a front end E hinged to the bottom of the box, in combination with a removable flanged cover consisting of two sections T T hinged'together transversely, the depending flanges of the hinged cover-section T being adapted to surround the upper edge of the end of the box and hold the hinged front end E in closed position, substantially as described.
