Description

(No Model.)
G. B. PAUL. APPARATUS FOR: WARMING BEDS.
Patented Dec. 8, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE BENTLEY PAUL, OF WVHITTEMORE, IOlVA.
APPARATUS FOR WARMING BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,585, dated December 8,1891.
Application filed January 3, 1891. Serial No, 376,637. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE BENTLEY PAUL, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Whittemore, in the county of Kossuth and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for \Varming Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to utilize the heat of a lamp for warming a bed; and my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of a device for elevating bed-covers, with a tube for conveying heat, a lamp for generating heat, and a bed, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my device for elevating the covers of a bed, showing said device open as required for practical use. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same device, showing it closed or folded together in condition to be transported. Fig, 3 is a side view of the tube used to convey the hot air from the lamp to the bed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing my complete apparatus applied to a bed.
A represents the base of my cover-lifting device, and is preferably between one foot and two feet in length, but may vary in size, as desired. This base has a shoulder formed near the center of its top side, and one portion thereof is thinner than the portion opposite thereto. I
B represents a wooden bar hinged to the base A and adapted to lie upon the thinner portion of the said base, with which it corresponds in length.
G represents a strap one end of which is fixed to the bar B and the other end fixed to the outer end of the thinner portion of the base A to prevent said bar B from being opened too far and breaking its connection with the base A.
D represents the top bar of my cover-lifting device, which is hinged to the upper end of the bar B and is at all'times parallel With the base A. The bar D is formed in two sections hinged together and having their meettube F is provided with a downwardly-opening bell-shaped end portion H, the mouth of which is larger than the diameter of the tube.
J represents an oil-lamp placed upon the floor directly beneath the end H ofthe tube, and is used to supply heat to said tube.
When my device is about to be placed in use, the cover-lifting apparatus should be folded together, except the bar D, which should remain extended. The folded device should then be inserted beneath the covers longitudinally of the bed and the bars D and B elevated. By so doing the covers are elevated at the center of the bed, forming a space capable of beingheated. The small end of the tube F should then be inserted in the said space, and alamp placed beneath the large end H of the'tube will supply hot air, which the said. tube will convey to the interior of the bed to warm said bed.
I claim as my invention- 1. A device for lifting and supporting bedcovers, comprising a base A, a bar B, hinged to the top and central part of the bar A, a strap 0, connected with the end portions of the base A and bar B, and the bar D, composed of two parts having hinged connection, and all the parts adapted to be folded compactly together in the manner set forth and also unfolded and used in a bed, for the purposes stated.
2. A folding device consisting of the base A, bar B, strap (1, and jointed bar D, a heatconveying tube F, and a lamp, arranged and combined with a bed substantially as shown and described, to operate in the manner set forth, for the purposes stated.
CLARENCE BENTLEY PAUL.
