JOSEPH DAVIDOFF, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FOLDING COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 708,869, dated September 9, 1902.
7 Application filed October 9, 1901. Serial No. 78,073. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'JOfiEPH' DAVIDOFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn,
' in the county of Kings and State of New York,
have invented a new and Improved Folding Cot, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved folding cot which is simple and durable in construction, composed'of comparatively few parts, not liable to get out of order, readily set up, and adapted to be folded in very little space.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement with the parts slightly tilted up. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section of one of the collars in the fork of a supporting-arm. Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section of the reach, one of the hea(ls,and its supporting arms and legs.
.Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 6 is an enlarged side elevation of the reach and part of its joint shown in section. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the reach, the heads, supporting-arms, and legs in the folded position; and Fig.8 is a like view of the side rails and the mattress in a folded position. I
The improved folding cot consists, essentially, of a reach A, carrying at its ends heads B, each of which is provided with pivoted legs (Lextending downwardly and outwardly, and supporting-arms D, extending upwardly and outwardly. The outer ends of the supporting-arms D are provided with forks E, adapted to receive collars F, attached to the side rails G, carrying the mattress H, of afabric or other suitable material.
The reach A is preferably made in two or more sections A A provided at adjacent ends with blocks A A pivotally connected with each other by links A to allow of folding the sections A and A as plainly illustrated inFig. 7. A dowel-pin A is carried on one of the blocks to engage a recess in the other block and securely hold the blocks in a locked position at the time the reach-sections are extended, as plainly shown in Fig. 1.
The legs 0 and the arms D are pivoted on the headsBand rest against flanges B,formed on the outer ends of the heads, the latter screwing on the outer threaded ends of the reach A, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. Washers B are mounted to turn on the reach A and engage the heads at the inner faces thereof to hold the legs and arms in an extended position between the flanges B and the washers, each of the latter resting on a collar A", formed on the reach A. The washers B are provided with slots b, adapted to register withthe legs 0 and arms D to permit of folding the said legs and arms on the reach. (See Fig. 7.)
Each of the collars F has its main body F made polygonal, as indicated in Fig. 3, to fit the correspondingly-shaped side Walls E of the fork E, and each collar F is provided with two flanges FF, forming a groove with the body of the collar and reaching opposite sides of the wall E, but extending within segmental flanges E arranged on the said forks.
When it is desired to stretch the mattress H more tightly, it is only necessary to turn the side rails G to wind up some of the mattress material on the side rods and then press the collar-bodies Finto the side walls E of the forks to hold the side rails against turning and unwinding of the mattress H. By having the forks and collars arranged as described the side rails are prevented from longitudinal shifting, as well as from turning on their own axes. Asindicated in Fig. 1, each of the side rails G is preferably made in sections connected with each other. by joints G, similar to the joints of the reachsections A A so that further description of the joints G is not deemed necessary. Each of the forks E is provided at the inside with a socket E for receiving-posts K, adapted to support a canopyor the like.
-When it is desired to set up the cot, then the reach A is extended, as shown in Fig. 1, and the legs 0 are swung outward and downward to rest on the floor or other support, while the arms D are swung outward and upward to bring the forks into position to receive the collars F on the extended side rails G. The several parts are now securely extended and are not liable to collapse when the mattress is occupied by a person.
\Vhen it is desired to fold the cot, the collars F are disengaged from the forks E, and then the sections of the side rails G are folded up and the mattress rolled upon the folded section, as indicated in Fig. 8. The operator now turns the washers 13 to bring their slots 1) into register with the arms D and legs 0 to allow of swinging the arms D and the legs 0 inward upon the reach-sections A A and then the operator folds the reach, as illustrated in Fig. 7. The entire cot now consists of two bundles, which can be conveniently carried about.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A folding cot, comprising side rails for carrying a mattress, collars secured on the outer ends of the rails and having side flanges, supporting-arms for the side rails having forks at one end for engagementwith the collars between the flanges, the forks having segmental flanges within which the flanges of the collars extend, as set forth.
2. A folding cot, comprising side rails each made in sections hinged together, collars secured on the sections of theside rail and having polygonal bodies and side flanges, and supporting-arms each having a fork at its outer end having its inner side walls shaped to correspond with the body of the collar, the forks being provided with segmental flanges, the flanges of the collars extending on opposite sides of the walls of the fork but within the segmental flanges on said forks, as set forth.
3. A folding cot having side rails, a mattress secured to the said side rails, collars secured on the side rails and having polygonal bodies and side flanges, and supporting-arms formed at their outer ends with forks having correspondingly-shaped side walls, walls into which fit the said collar-bodies, each fork being formed with a segmental flange the flanges of the collars extending 011 opposite sides of the polygonalshaped walls of the forks but within the segmental flanges of said forks, as Set forth.
4. A folding cot, comprising a reach, heads held on the ends of the reach, legs pivoted on the said heads, supporting-arms pivoted on the said heads and having receiving-forks at their outer ends, side bars having collars for engaging the said forks, and a mattress carried by the said side bars, as set forth.
5. A folding cot, comprising a sectional folding reach, heads secured on the ends of the reach, legs pivoted to the heads and ex tending radially outward and downward, supporting-arms pivoted on the heads and extending radially therefrom in an outward and upward direction, forks at the outer ends of the supporting-arms, side rails made in folding sections and having collars for engaging the said forks, and a mattress secured to the said side rails, as set forth.
6. A folding cot, comprising areach, heads held on the ends of the reach, legs pivoted on the said heads, supporting-arms pivoted on the said heads, side bars, and a mattress carried by the side bars, the said supportingarms and side bars being provided with engaging means, as set forth.
7. A folding cot, comprising a reach, heads screwing on the outer threaded end of the reach, flanges formed on the outer ends of the heads, washers mounted to turn on the reach and engaging the heads at the inner faces thereof, collars on the reach and engaging the Washers, the said washers being'provided with slots, legs pivoted on the heads between the flanges and the washers, supporting-arms pivoted on the heads, side bars adapted to be supported by said arms, and a mattress carried by the said side bars, the slots of the washers being adapted to register with the supporting arms and legs to permit of folding the arms and legs on the reach, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH DAVIDOFF.
