FOLDABLE STOOL.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ROBERT P. Mann and ROBERT B. THOMPSON, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a F'oldable Stool; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to foldable stools especially designed for camping outfits, deck chairs for steamers or other purposes where it is desired to fold and stack the stools after using, and it is an object of our invention to so construct the stool that the same may be folded into a very compact form. Our invention comprises the novel features and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of our invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar parts in the different figures:

Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of our novel stool in extended position for use.

In referring to the different figures of the drawing, it will be noted that the stool comprises two pairs of spaced crossed legs 1 and 2 formed preferably of angle shaped members or the like pivoted intermediate their ends by pivots 3 and adapted to be transversely folded into a rectangular form, as shown. Cross braces or members 4 connect the spaced legs by means of pivots 5 and flexible members 6 serve as diagonal braces extending from the members 4 to the pair of cross legs 1. Each flexible member 6 comprises preferably a link 6 pivoted to a leg 1, and a link 6 pivoted to a cross member a the links over lap 1921. Serial NO. 459,657.

ping at their joined ends for a short distance, and being pivoted together by pivot 7, one link having a lug'8 at its end that engages the other link to hold the two links in rigid relation. This construction allows the members 6 to flex upwardly so that one pair of crossed legs may be folded in superimposed and overlapping relation on the other pair of legs, as shown in Fig. 3. In this folding process, one pair of cross legs,

those lettered 2 in this instance, will shift longitudinally in advance of the legs 1 and keep approaching the legs 1 to form a compact arrangement. This folding process we term the longitudinal folding as contradistinguished from the transverse folding previously described.

This stool is provided with the usual canvas seat 9 or the like which is supported on cross braces or members 10 pivoted by means of pivots 11 to the cross legs, the cross bars having depending ends so that the bars 10 may be supported above the crossed legs. The use of the pivots 11 allows one pair of legs to be folded longitudinally upon the other pair. It should be noted that all the cross members and braces are pivotally secured to the legs of the stool so that the longitudinal folding is made possible.

By constructing the stool so that the same may be both transversely and longitudinally folded, we secure a compact folded stool that is adapted for convenient packing in a camping outfit, or for shipping and storing purposes.

We are aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and we therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.

We claim as our invention:

1. A foldable camp stool comprising two pair of crossed legs, each pair being pivoted together intermediate the ends thereof, up per transverse members having depending end lugs pivoted to opposite legs of the different pairs and adapted for supporting the seat above the upper ends of said legs, lower transverse brace members pivotally connecting said legs, and flexible diagonal braces ponnecting the lower brace members and egs.
