EMERGENCY-COT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1908.
Application filed May 17. 1907. Serial No. 374.222.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN H. TnoMrsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, county of Schenectady, and
State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Emergency- Cots, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subse uently claimed.
Reference may e had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several fi res therein.
Figure 1 0 the drawings is a view in side elevation of my improved cot set up for use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of thefolded cot. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section of the same taken on the broken line 44 in Fig.3. Fi 5 is a view in elevation of one side of the fol ded cot. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the opposite side of the cot. Fig. 7 is a side view of oneof the side-bars detached, partly broken awayand partly folded.v
The principal object ofthe invention is to provide a cot or bed adapted for use in emergencies, and capable of being knocked down and stored in a small space when not in use or when it is desired to transport the same from place to place.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1, represents the head and, 2, the foot of the cot,
each comprising a hollow'structure or casing adapted to contain certain other portions of the device and each open on the side toward the other whereby said casings are together adapted to form an inclosure.
Theh'ead and foot when not in use are supported upon folding legs, 3, each fitting with in asocketA, on the head or foot, and having its inner end provided with a slot having a rectangular end at, 6, adapted to receive and closely fit. a rectangular pin or bar, 7, extending through the socket, the other end of said slot being enlarged at, 8,'to loosely receive said rectangular pin. The dimensions of the socket are such that a longitudinal slide-.
vertical or horizontal position.
. in cross-section, the body 1 movement of the leg is permitted in either a When the cot is in use the legs extend vertically, with the rectangular pin, 7, seated in the rectangular portion, 6, of, the -'slot. Each leg can be folded bylifting the head or foot-of the cot with which it is connected, then forcing the leg outwardly until the pin,7, is located in the enlarged portion, 8, of the slot. The leg is then swung inwardly to a horizontal position, and in this position is forced outwardly to again seat the pin, 7, in the rectangular portion, 6, of the slot which serves to hold the leg in folded horizontal position.
The head and foot of the cot are connected together by a flexible bottom, 9, preferably made of canvas, connected at one end with the head at, 10, and connected at its other end with a drum or roller, 12, upon which it is ada ted to be wound. The trunnions of the IQ ler, 12, have bearings in the end-walls of the foot, one of said trunnions, 13, having fixed thereon a ratchet, 14, and means for rotating the same, as a hand-wheel, 15, located exteriorly of the foot at one end thereof. The ratchet, 14, is adapted to be engaged by a spring-actuated dog 16. The head and foot of thecot are also connected together by a pair of folding side-bars, 17, each having hook-ends at 18 adapted to engage recessed portions of the head and foot. One member of each sidebar is of channeled form in cross-section and the other T-shaped of the "if-shaped member being adapted to e within the channeled member when the bar is folded. The two-bar members are connected together bya rectangular pin, 19, inserted through the channeled member and through one end of the body of the if-shaped member, the latter being stripped of its head-fiangesadjacent to said end and provided with a slot having its inner end, 20, rectangular in form to fit said pin, and its outer end enlarged as shown at,
21, to loosely receive said pm.
When the side-bar is removed from the cot the bar members can be pulled in opposite directions until the pin, 19, enters the enlarged end, 21, of the slot whereupon one bar-member can be swung upon the other to fold the bar. The hollow head of the cot is adapted to' receive both side bars when folded. When the side bars are in osition they serve to forcibly-hold apart t e head and foot of the cot so that by winding more or less of the canvas bottom upon the roller 12, any desired degreeof tension-can be imparted to the canvas bottom which is prevented from unrolling by the engagement of the dog, 16, with the ratchet 14.
When it is desired to knock down or fold the cot, the dog, 16, is disengaged from the ratchet, 14, to relieve the tension on. the canvas bottom, the side-bars are removed, folded, and placed Within the hollow head, and the canvas is again wound upon the roller, 12, until the head and foot are drawn closely together,,-as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, inwhich position they are retained by the en:
gagement of the dog, 16, with the ratchet, 14.
Ifde sired, the canvas bottom may be provided near the head of the cot with a looseflap, 22, provided with button-holes ada ted to receive studs, 23, on the outer side 0 the head adapted to support said flap in an inclined position -to form a head-rest, When the cot is folded or packed up this flap is de tached from the studs and contained within the hollow-head.
- When desired the cot may be provided with a blanket, 24, connected. with and adapted to be wound upon the drum or roller, 25, also located in the hollow foot. The trunnions of the blanket-roll have bearings in the end walls of the foot, one of said trunnions, 27, projecting from the end of the foot opposite that from which the canvas-' roll-trunnion projects, the blanket-roll trunnion, 27, being provided with an o erating hand-wheel, 28, and with a rate et, 29, adapted to beengaged by a sprin -actuated dog 31. When the cot is to be folded the blanket is wound upon the roller 25. The outer end of the blanket is provided; with a corded or beaded edge, 32 ,'of a size adapted to engage the walls of the slit, 30, to revent the complete withdrawal of the lanket within the foot-casing. When desired the blanket and blanket-roll may be omitted.
My improved cot is adapted to be folded into a small compact package adapted to be carried in a trunk, if desired, and when needed it can be easily and quickly set up and made ready for use.
Either or both of the head and foot-casings may be provided with hand-holes, 36, for convenience in lifting or transporting the cot, as shown inFig. 3, or with handles, 35, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a cot or bed, the combination with a head-member and a foot-member each hollow and open on the side toward the other, and together adapted to form aninclosure;
of detachable side-bars adapted to connect together and hold apart'said head and footmembers; a flexible bottom connected at one end with one of said head and footmembers; and a roll mounted upon the other of said head and foot-members, and connected. with the other end ofsaid flexible bottom, which bottom enters both hollow members through the open sides thereof.
