UiTEn STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVE SCHVAB, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
ALBU M-LEAF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,591, dated November 3, 1891.
Application filed June 11, 1891. Serial No. 395,935. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvE SCHWAB, a citizen of t-he United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Album-Leaves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a leaf for photographic albums, whereby the operation of introducing and removing the pictures from the pockets is materially facilitated.
The peculiar and novel construction of my album-leaf is pointed out in the following specification and elai ms andillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my leaf when the same is thrown open for the introduction or removal of a picture. Fig. 2 is a section in the plane zr, Fig. l. Fig. 3' is a transverse section in the plane y y, Fig. l, when the leaf is closed. Fig. 4 is a similar section in the plane e z, Fig.
My new album-leaf is composed of two layers A B of pasteboard or other suitable material, which are united by a flexible back O. Each of the layers A and B is provided with one or more openings c., the outer edges of which are provided with inwardly-projecting flanges I), which form a support for the pictures D. (See Figs.` 2 and 4..) On the inner surface of the layersA B are secured flexible flaps c, which overlap the sides of the openings a., and which, when the leaf is open, as shown in Figs. l and 2, can be readily turned back if it is desired to introduce or to remove a picture. If the two layers are closed up, the pictures are retained in position by the flanges b on the outside'and by the flaps c on the inside. Then the two layers of the leaf are closed up to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4., they are retained by suitable engaging devices with sufficient tenacity to prevent said layers from opening spontaneously. ln the example shownin the drawings the engaging devices consist of one or more projections e, secured to the inner face of one of the layers, and a corresponding number of recessesf, formed in the inner face of the other layer, said recesses being in such positions that when the layers are closed up the projections e will engage the recessesf and retain the layers in their closed position simply by frictional contact between the contours of the projections and the inner edges of the recesses. By these means an albumleaf is produced which permits of introducing and removing the pictures without danger of tearing` or injuring any portion of the leaf, and, furthermore, my leaf, when closed, has the appearance of an ordinary album-leaf.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An album-leaf composed of two layers united by a flexible back, each layer being provided with an opening (one or more) having on its outer side the attached picturesupporting flange I) and on its inner side the flexible picture-retaining naps c, substantially as described.
2. Analbum composed of two layers united by a flexible back, an opening in each layer, iianges ZJ, attached on the outside, and flexible fiaps c on the inside of said opening, and engaging devices for retaining said layers in a closed position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
