aumam fltous NITED STATES PATENT harem HERMANN O. FISCHER, OF NEIV YORK, AND LOUIS A. SCHMIDT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COVER FOR BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,943, dated October 3, 1893.
Application filed December 31, 1892. Serial No. 456.881., (No. model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HERMANN O. FISCHER, residing at New York, in the county of New York, and LOUIS A. SCHMIDT, residing at.
Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Boxes and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved cover for boxes, medallions, badges and like articles, said cover being so constructel that by the simple turning of a portion of the same the appearance is entirely changed, and therebya so-called surprise-picture furnished; and the invention consists of a cover for boxes and other articles, which comprise an exterior ring-shaped frame provided with fixed sections of which one section underlaps the adjoining section and of an interior axiallymovable frame that is also composed of sections which are adapted to overlap the fixed sections, so as to represent a diiferent picture or ornamentation from that presented by the face of the fixed sections.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent top-views of our improved cover for boxes and similar articles, showing the same before and after the shifting of the movable frame. Fig. 3, is a front-view of the cover, showing the interior movable frame in position to overlap partly the sections of the exterior frame. Fig. 4c, is a vertical transverse section on line 4 4, Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 7 are respectively a top-view of the interior movable frame of the cover and a top-view of the exterior fixed frame of the same, and Figs. 6 and 8, are respectively vertical transverse sections on line 6 6 and 8 8 of Figs. 5 and 7. Fig. 9 represents a perspective view of the two frames forming the box cover in position one below the other ready to be placed together. Fig. 10 represents a plan viewof the under side of the top frame, the lips a being curled over to show more clearly how the sectoral sections are formed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings A represents a 50 ring-shaped frame, which is made of cardboard, sheet-metal or other suitable material.
Sectoral-"preferably quadran=talsections a,
j a, are attached at their outer arc-shaped edges f to the ring-shaped frame A and extend to the centerthereof.
shaped frame A and is adapted to be shifted axially thereon. This frame Bis preferably made in the form of a disk and is provided with semi-circular sections 19, b, which have a sli-ghtlysmaller, radius than the sectoral sections 0., a. These semi-circular sections b, b, are attached at one end to the shifting frame B, and one section overlaps another, covering a portion thereof In the construction illustrated in theaccom panyi'ng drawings, the uncovered portionsof t-hesemi-circu-la-r sections are in the form of quadrants, but they may be in any other desired sectoral form. A button d at the center, or a stud d at the circumferenceof the shifting frame B servesto turn said shifting frame on its axis in the I ring-shaped frame A. The two frames A and B are put together in such a way that the sections of either frame may cover the sections of the other by changing the face of the device. When the shifting frame B is placed in operative connection with the frame A the radial edge of the free end of one of each of the semi-circular sections 12, b, lies over the lip 01, of one of the sectoral sections a. and under the lipless edge of the adjacent sectoral section.
In the operation of this improved cover for boxes the change in the appearance thereof is effected by turning the button at or by swinging the stud (2' attached to the shifting frame. When the ornamentation on the sections at, a, is exposed and another ornamentation is desired, the button d is turned from the left to the right and the sections b, I), ride over and cover the sections a, a, of the frame A, the degree of rotation of the frame B corresponding to the size of the sectoral sections a, a. The lips a of said sectoral sections a, a, serve to hold the sections of both disks in their proper relative positions and prevent obstructive contact of the edges of the radial sections of one frame with those of the other when the inner frame is rotated from right to left. When said sections b, I), cover entirely the sections a, a, a new ornamentation is revealed. When the sections b, b, of the frame B are exposed and it is desired to exhibit the faces of the sections a, a, the button d or stud d is turned from the right to the left and the shifting sections b, I), slide back under the sections a, a, and the faces of the latter are exposed. t
We claim as our invention 1. A shifting dial adapted for use as a cover for boxes and for other purposes, composed of an outer frame, overlapping sectoral sections attached at their outer edges to said frame, an inner frame adapted to shift axially on said outer frame, and overlapping sections attached at one end thereof to said inner frame, the sections of one frame sliding under the sections of the other when the parts are shifted, substantially as described.
2. A shifting dial adapted for use as a cover for boxes and for other purposes, composed of an outer frame, overlapping sectoral quadrantal sections attached at their outer edges to said frame, an inner frame adapted to shift axially within said outer frame, and overlapping semi-circular sections attached at one end thereof to said inner frame, the sections of one frame sliding under the sections of the other when the parts are shifted, substantially as described.
3. A shifting dial adapted for use as a cover for boxes and for other purposes composed of an outer frame, overlapping sectoral sections provided with lips and attached at their outer edges to said outer frame, an ax1ally shifting inner frame, and overlapping sections on said inner frame.
4. In a c0ver,f0r boxes and like articles, the combination of a ring-shaped outer frame, sectoral sections attached at their outer edges to said frame, each of said sectoral sections being provided with a lip on one of its radial edges, an inner frame adapted to shift axially in said outer frame, semi-circular sections attached at one end to said inner frame adapted to slide under and ride over the sectoral sections, and means for shifting said inner frame, substantially as described.
5. A shifting dial adapted for use as a cover for boxes and for other purposes consisting of a ring-shaped outer frame, sectoral sections attached at their outer edges to said frame, each of said sectoral sections being provided with an arc-shaped lip on one of its radial edges, an inner frame adapted to shift axially in said outer frame, semi-circular sections attached at one end to said inner frame and adapted to slide under and ride over said sectoral sections, and a button or stud on said inner frame for shifting it, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
