Description

(No Model.)
S. E. BRIGGS. DISPLAY BOX.
No. 457,598. Patentd Aug. 11, 1891.
W asses: V v Inventor Fer UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYLVESTER E. BRIGGS, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
DISPLAY-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,598, dated August 11, 1891.
Application filed October 23, 1890. Serial No. 369,141. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SYLVESTER E. BRIGGS, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in the city of Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to display boxes or cases in which a large variety of numerous kinds of small articles and goods can be exhibited; and the object of the invention is to provide'a display-box that when opened up and the parts arranged the box is mounted at an inclination as desired to best exhibit its contents, and in case of slight accident it merely falls down fiat and the contents are not seriously disarranged. I attain this object by means of the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved display -box when mounted. Fig. 2 represents an end elevation of the same when mounted, and Fig. 3 represents an end elevation of the same when closed up. The dotted lines exhibit the courses of the parts in being closed.
Similar numbers of reference refer to similar parts throughout this specification and the accompanying drawings.
The body 1 of my display-box is the ordinary form of box employed for the purpose; but is provided with additional stop-pieces 2, of which there is one on each end, secured thereto or formed on and extending from flush with the bottom to half or more of the depth of the box, and at the rear side the said stoppieces 2 are cut somewhat shorter and at a dilferent angle from the angle of the front and rear of the box, which is lozenge-shaped or rhomboidal in the end. At the rear upper corner of each end a hinge 3 is provided to attach the strips 4. thereto. The hinge 3 may be, as shown, a simple screw or rivet passing through the said strip 4, or it may be a more substantial form of metal hinge adapted to secure the said strip 4, jointed to the body 1. The said strips 4. are similar in form and secured to act in conjunction by means of the 4 partial lid 5, securing them and adapted to fit on and engage the front portion of the top of the box, as shown in Fig. 3.
To the rear top edge of the bodyl is hinged by suitable hinges 6 the lid 7, of the length to permit the strips 4 to pass its ends freely, and at the front edge 8 of said lid 7 a bevel is formed to suit another bevel on the rear edge 9 of the partial lid 5, the purpose of the said bevels being to hold the rear lid 7 down closed by means of the front partial lid 5, resting on and covering the same.
To secure the lid 5 and the box closed, a clasp-hook 10, of the ordinary form, secured by a screw and engaging an eye at the hook end, may be used.
In carefully-constructed boxes of the better kinds of woods, brass or other metallic straps and binding may be employed to strengthen and beautify the box.
The operation of the box is very simple. The lid 5 is opened and vibrated or swung back andin under the rear side of the box as far as it is permitted to go by the stop-pieces 2, which engage the strips 4. The body 1 will then be supported by the hinges 3 and at its lower front edge resting on the support. The rear lid 7 is next opened back on its hinges 6, which are intended to hold it at an inclination to the rear, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is-
1. In a display box or case, the partial lid having its end pieces extended to the rear of the box and jointed thereto, so as to vibrate as specified, and the rear edge of said lid beveled to rest on the rear partial lid, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a display box or case, the combination of the partial lid having its end pieces extended to the rear of the box and jointed thereto, with the rear partial lid hinged to the rear edge of the box and having a beveled front edge upon which the rear edge of the partial lid rests when the box is closed, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a display box or case, the strips 4, hinged by one end to the body 1 and secured at the other end to the front partial lid havpartial lid hinged to the rear of the box, and ing an under beveled edge, substantially as the stop-pieces secured on sand box,substan- 10 shown and described. tially as shown and described.
4. In a display-box, the combination of the 5 partial lid to cover the front of the box, the S. E. BRIGGS.
strips hinged at one end to the body of said Witnesses: box and secured to the said partial lid at the GEO. H. HOGG,
other end with the body of the box, the rear 0. L. BEDSON.
