to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in hames for a harness; and it consists of certain details of construction, which willbehereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whicht Figure l is a perspective view of my invention complete applied to use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1 on line a; m. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the several parts separated from each other.

Referring to the various details by letter, A is the hame, which may be of the usual or any preferred construction, to which I secure my improvements, which are located at that part of the hame affording a point of attachment for the end of the tug.

Generallyspeaking, the object of my invention consists in an adjustable device that will enable the point of attachment for the tug and the hame to be raised or lowered at the will of the attendant, in order that the draft may be properly placed upon that part of the collar presenting the greatest bearing-surface to the neck of the horse. At that part of the hanie where'the tug is usually attached I secure the standards B, after the bolt on the end of the same has passed through the hame, by means of a nut or by upsetting the end there of, though said standards may be provided with a screw-thread that will enable the same to be screwed into the hame, and thus secured. It will be seen that the standards B consist of the head b and the cylindrical end I), the latter being the part inserted in the hame, While the former. is provided with a rectangular opening, in which is secured the end of the cog bar or cylindrical support 0, as shown. Said cog-bar or support consists of a section of a cylindrical rod, upon the upper side of which is secured, referably integral therewith, aseries of lugs or teeth 0, the object of which will be hereinafter made apparent. I mount upon the cog-bar O the adjustable collar D, which is so formed that it will loosely slide upon the cog-bar, and is provided its entire length with the longitudinal slot or opening d, while one of the edges of the collar thus cut away is provided with a series of notches 01' so arranged that they wil coincide in position with and receive the series of teeth upon the upper side of the cogbar just referred to. The slot d just described is of a sufficient width to enable the collar to be placed upon the cog-bar by so adjusting it that said slot or groove dwill re ceive longitudinally said teeth, when a lotating movement of the collar will cause a seriesof the teeth to enter the series of notches 01', provided upon one edge of the collar, as will be readily understood. In order to hold the collar in the adjusted position, I provide the spring-catch E, which is preferably made so as to partly encircle the collar, and has upon one end the inwardly-reaching lug e. The springcatch E is secured to the adjustable collar D, preferably at the lower end of the same, so that the inwardly-reaching lug e on the free end of the spring-catch closes the lower end of the slot d immediately below the lowermost recess d. It will be seen that this lug 6 will prevent the collar D from accidentally sliding up or down on the bar C, as when the collar is turned around sufficiently to clear the teeth a from the notches d the lug a will then stand between two of the teeth or cogs c, and thus prevent the collar from accidentally sliding up or down on the cog-bar.

To adjust the collar D up or down it is only necessary to turn the collar until the cogs c are clear of the notches d, and then draw the locking-1n g e outward, so that it will not come in contact with the teeth 0 of the cog-bar, when the collar D can be readily slipped or moved up or down on the cog-bar t0 the defor the tug, the collar is encircled by the clip F, and is provided with the holes f, so placed that they will receive the lugs 11', formed integrally with the collar and placed thereon at diametrical points.

It will be seen from the foregoing description that I have provided a simple and eifective means for producing an adjustable attachment between the tug and the hame; and believing that the advantages, construction, and operation of the device will be fully n11- derstood from the foregoing description, furtherrefercnce thereto is deemed unnecessary.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An adjustable hame consisting of the standards, a cog-bar mounted in the standards and carrying the adjustable collar having a series of notches upon one edge adapted to receive and be secured by a series of teeth on the cog-bar, said collar being further pro vided with the diametrical lugs adapted to secure the clip in position, and the lockingcatch arranged to partly encircle the collar and having its inwardly-reaching end so formed that it will enter the longitudinal slot in the collar and lock the latter against vertical movement, as set forth.

In an adjustable attachment for tugs, the combination of the hame, the standards secured therein, the cog-bar mounted within the standards and having a series of teeth adapted to enter corresponding notches in the edge of the collar to secure the latter in an adjusted position by means of the locking-catch, substantially as set forth.

The combination of thehame, the standards secured therein, the cog-bar mounted in the standards and having a series of teeth, the collar loosely fittedto the cog-bar and having the longitudinal slot and the transversely-arranged series of notches, and further provided With a diainetrical lug, the spring-catch adapted to lock the collar in an adjusted position, and the clip secured on the collar by means of the diametrieal lugs and adapted to have its outer end secured to the tug, all substantially as described, and for the purpose named.
