SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,465, dated May 24, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SHERIDAN J. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hebron, in the county of Lawrence and State of Mississippi, have invented anew and useful Line-Holder and Trace-Guide, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in line holders or guides to be used in plowing; and the objects in view are to provide a cheap and simple device that may be readily attached and detached to and from or adjusted along the trace-chains of a plow-harness and is adapted to support the lines and prevent the same from rubbing and wearing away.

Other objects and advantages of the in vention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective in detail of a combined rein guide and support constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the device, the same being in position upon a trace-chain.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In practicing my invention I prefer to cast the guide-frame, and the same consists in a diamond-shaped loop 1, from which depend opposite parallel arms or hangers 2. The hangers are provided at their lower ends with bearing-perforations 3, which receive a pin 4:, upon which is mounted for rotation a concaved roller 5. Above the bearing-openings 8 bearing-slots 6 are formed in the hangers and the same receive the trunnions 7, formed upon a concaved roller 8, located above the said roller 5. The upper end of the guide-frame is provided with a transverse slot 9, and the lower end of the diamond-shaped loop 1 is provided with a perforation 10, vertically below the slot 9. In the slot and perforation/thus formed a pin 10, the upper end of which is provided with a head l1,is removably mounted. The pin has one of its faces provided with a groove 12, and in the same lies the tail end of a springcatch 13, the lower end of which is securedto the pin and the shoulder of which engages with the under side of the diamond-shaped loop, whereby the pin is prevented from accidental disengagement, but is capable of being disengaged and withdrawn byacompression of the springcatch against orinto the pin.

In the application of the device the chain is passed through the diamond-shaped loop and the device slid to a point between the hames and back-strap, after which the pin is inserted, so as to engage with or pass through a convenient link, and thus the device becomes locked at the desired point upon the chain. The lines or reins are now passed through the guide between the concaved rollers, and, while freely sliding therein without wear, are maintained or guided in position. By reason of the movability vertically of the upper roller the end of the lines usually buckled together or knotted may be readily passed through the device, and after such passage the upper roller will return to its position, accommodating itself and the distance between the rollers to the thickness of the lines.

From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen I have provided a device of great simplicity and cheapness that is readily attached and detached to the trace-chains of heavy draft-harness ordinarily employed for plowing.

Having described my invention, what I claim isl. The herein-described rein-support, the same consisting of the upper trace-chain-receiving eye, adapted to be supported on the trace-chain and having a locking-bolt for engaging one of the links of the chain, a reinsupporting loop or frame depending from the eye, and rollers located in the loop or frame, substantially as specified.
