Description

A; V. SMITH.
GIRTH.
No, 268,953 Patented Dec. 12,- 1882;,
; .UNlTI-EDSSTATES PATENT OFFICE;
atonzo v. SMITH, or OANA, CALIFORNIA.
GIRTHT SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,953, dated December 12, 1882.
I Application filed October 2, 1882. {No.modcl.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALoNzo Y. SMITH, of Caua, county of Butte, State of California, have invented an Improved Girth; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex act description thereof.
My invention relates to a new and useful girth and hook for pack-saddles; and it cousists in an ordinary pack-girth having at one end a wooden roll to secure the rope and at the other a peculiar link to receive the hook, which said hook is provided with a friction roller or spool, as will hereinafter fully appear.
The present form of pack-girth is provided at one end with a ring secured by a leather strap, and has at the other end an ordinary hook secured likewise. The rope passes from the ring over the pack on horses back and down on member side to thehook, around which it passes and is secured. I have found byexperience that there are two serious objections to' this form of girth and hook. In the first place the rope, in passing around the hook, must necessarily be drawn tight, and such great friction is caused thereby when the pack begins to work that in the course of a short time the strands wear and the rope breaks.
In the second place ,the hook in one end and the ring in the other, by being secured as they are now done, soon wear the straps and pull out from the girth. g
The object ofmy invention is to overcome these difficulties by providing an anti-friction hook, and by securing it and the rope in such a manner as will subject the'girth to the'least wear.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a rear view of a horse, showing the application of my device. Fig. 2 is a view of my device.
Let A represent an ordinary pack-girth, made, as usual, of leather and canvas. At its ends are secured strong leather strips B, forming loops 1), as shown.
O is a rod having a central link, 0. This rod fits through the leather loop I) at one end of the girth, and its link 0 projects through an aperture, as shown. Rivets 6, through the leather B, behind rod C, keep it'in place. In
the leather loop b at the other end of the girth is a wooden roll, D, and through the leather strap B is made a hole, d.
- E represents the hook. This consists of a strong bar, one end of which is formed into a small book, m. The otherend is bent to form the main hook, in which is mounted a friction roller or spool, F.
The use of my device is seen particularly in Fig. 1. The small hook in of the hook E ongages -with the link 0. The rope- R is secured around the wooden roll D through the hole d. It thence passes up and over the packP-on the back of the horse and down to and around the friction-roller F of the hook E, and is secured appropriately. It will be seen that by.
reason of the roller there will be no friction on the rope, and no matter how much the pack may work the rope will not wear. Nor is there any danger of the rod G coming out, asit is securely held in the'leather loop I). .The rope at the other end, by being secured around the wooden roll, with the leather intervening, will be subject to little friction, and there will be no danger of working loose, as the roll is firmly set in the leather loop.
It will be observed that the hook E is easily removable from its link, and therefore it may be transferred from one girth to another, t occasion should require.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The girth A, in combination with the hook E, secured to its end, said hook having a friction roller or spool, F, mounted in its end, substantially as herein described.
2. The girth A, having a rope, R, attached to one end, in combination with the hook E, secured to its other end, said hook having a friction roller or spool, F, mounted in its end, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
3. The girth A, having a leather loop, b at one end, and the rod 0, having a central link, 0, said rod being fitted and secured in the leather loop, with its link extending through an aperture therein, in combination with the hook E, having a small end hook, on, engaging with link a, and a friction roller or spool, secured around the wooden roll D, all arranged 10 F, mounted in its other end, substantially as substantially as and for the purpose herein doand for the purpose herein described. scribed.
4. The girth A, having leather loops b at In witness whereofI hereunto set my hand. each end, the'wooden roll D in one loop, and
the rod 0, having a central link, 0, in the other i ALONZO SMITH loop, in combination with the hook E, engag- Witnesses: ing with link 0, and having a friction roller or A. MAYERS,
spool, F, mounted in its end, and the rope R, J. H. BLOOD.
