Description
(N0 ModeL) o. M.REYNOLDS..
CHECK RE'IN HOOK.
No; 254,377. Patented Feb. 28.1882.
LNV'EJVTUR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS M. REYNOLDS, OF MIFFLIN, WISCONSIN.
CHECK- REIN HOOK.
VSPECIFICATTON forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,377, dated February 28, 1862.
Application filed December 1, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, (Evans M. REYNOLDS, of Mifflin, in the county of Iowa, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Rein Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specifi; cation.
This invention relates to certain improvements in check-rein holders; and it has for its objects to provide a device that may be substituted for the ordinary check-rein hook, and which will permit the animal to move its head with greater ease and .freedom'than the ordinary check-rein hook, and at the same time will hold the rein securely. These objects I attain by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved check-rein holder, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same.
The letter A indicates a metallic plate which constitutes the base of the device, the said plate being provided at one end with a slot, B, by means of which the harness-strap may be secured to it. The said plate is provided with a screw threaded bolt, 0, by means of which it can be secured to harness already in use, or it may be cast with the saddle-tree when intended for new harness. The said plate is provided with an upright bolt, D, which is screw-threaded at its upper end for the reception of an ornamental nut, E, having a broad flange, H. t
(No model.)
The letter L indicates an annulus surrounding the bolt D loosely, which forms a seat for a friction-roller, M, setting upon said bolt and confined thereon by means of the nut E.
The letter N indicates a flat spring secured to the base A, and having a slot, P, in which is located a cam-lever, Q, which is fulcrumed by means of a pin, R, which sets in the curved ends S of the spring, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The cam-surface of the lever has a bearing against the upper surface of the plate A and the edge of the annulus L in such manner as to retain its position when turned up or down, as may be required. When turned up, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, and in section in Fig. 2, the lever rests against the flange H, and holds the check-rein, which passes around the roller, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In combination with thebase-plate A, adapted tobe secured to or cast with the saddletree of the harness, the upright bolt 1), se-
cured as described, the roller M, located thereon, the flanged nut H, and the lever Q and spring N, all arranged to operate substantially in the manner specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 9th day of November, 1881.
O. M. REYNOLDS.
