P. N. RANKIN.
HAME FASTENER.
Patented Dec. 8, 1885.
. INVENTOR 1% ATTORNEYS WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK N. RANKIN, OF SHELBYVILLE, TENNESSEE.
HAM E-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,107, dated December 8. 1885. Application filed August 3, 1885. Serial No. 173,415. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK N. RANKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shellbyville, in the county of Bedford and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and shows the fastener in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective View.
My invention relates to hamefasteners designed to be applied to plow-gear in lieu of the top and bottom hame-strings, and to buggy-harness and wagon-harness; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the base-plate of the hamefastener, which is provided near one end with two transverse parallel slots, B O, and
at the other end with two ears or lugs, D E,
between which ears a cam-lever, F, is fulcrumed.
G designates the hame-strap, which has one end, G, passed down through the transverse slot B and then up through the slot 0, the end of the strap G projecting just above the face of the plate A. The other end, H, of the strap G is passed along the top of the plate A and beneath the cam F of the cam-lever F, thence under and along the base-plate A and up through the slot 0. The strap G is then passed through the appropriate metal loop on the hame, and the end H of the strap is passed under the cam of the lever F, and the lever F is operated to cause the cam F to bear against the strap G, which will cause the strap G to be held firmly in place. By raising the lever F the cam F will be moved away from the strap, and the latter will be released and may be withdrawn. The greater the strain upon the strap the tighter will the cam bind the strap in place. By this construction no stitching is required to secure the hame-fastener in place.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination, with the hames, of the baseplate A, having the parallel slots at one end and the lugs D E at the opposite end, the cam-lever F, journaled in the said lugs, and the strap connected to the ends of the hames in loop form, with one end carried longitudinally around the said plate and through the parallel slots and detachably secured to said plate, and the opposite end secured to the plate by means of the cam-lever, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK N. RANKIN.
