CHARLES F. BEVERLY, 0F SALEM, OHIO.
. FASTENINGr-STRAP.
Specification of Letters Batent No. 8,884, dated January 16, 1845.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. BEVERLY, of Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new andvuse ful Improvement, Being an Apparatus for Fastening the Ends of Straps, Harness Tugs and Traces, and other Articles, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification.
Figure l is a vertical section of the apparatus, as applied to a haine tug and trace of harness. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the apparatus, detached from the harness. Fig. 3 is a section of a modification of the apparatus. Fig. A is a section of another modification of ditto.
Similar letters refer to corresponding parts.
The nature of this invention consists in securing the `ends of straps (or other articles) together by means of a strong pressure, exerted on one of the straps, between two rough metallic surfaces formed in a casting attached to the other strap and caused by the agency of a lever, thus dispensing with the buckle and holes used in the ordinary mode of fastening.
This apparatus consists of a metallic plate A with two sides BB between which is ai ranged a turning lever C turning on a pin D passing through said sides and lever brought down upon the plate A and secured by a cross bar E brought over the lever beneath projections B B cast on the sides by which the lever is held firmly down upon the plate. This plate is fastened to the strap or harness and is serrated or ridged on its upper surface at A. The lever is made convex on the side next the ridges on the plate as represented at C. The end of the strap to be fastened to the plate is brought between the lever, (previously raised as seen in Fig. 2) `and the ridged plate; the lever is then brought down upon the strap in the manner represented in Fig. l, in which F represents the end of the strap to be fastened and secured by the bar E which is brought under the projections, the convex part C of the lever pressing the strap into the channels of the plate and the ribs into the'strap by which the fastening is effected. The bar is connected to the lever by making the sides of the lever beveling to correspond with a dovetailed groove made in the bar into which the lever is inserted loosely so that the bar can slide over the same, without separating therefrom.
rIhe aforesaid ribs or projections of the parallel sides of the plate are notched to admit the bar and hold it securely from slipping longitudinally when inserted in the notches. The lever is made elastic toward the smaller or outer end that it may be pressed down in order to liberate the bar when required.
What I claim as my invention and which I desire to secure by Letters Patent is The before described method of fastening together the ends of straps and other arp CHARLES E. EEvEELY. Witnesses: i
EDWIN MAHEE, RICHD. KEY WATTS.
