Description

(No Model.)
I. G. GROS S. MUSTAUHE GUARD.
No. 441,155. Patented Nov. 25, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC G. GROSS, OF HENRYVILLE, ALABAMA.
MUSTAGHE-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,155, dated November 25, 1890.
Serial No. 388,745. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC G. GRoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Henryville, in the county of Marshall and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Must-ache- Guards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to mustache-guards; and it has for its object to provide a simple and improved device of this character adapted to be applied to or detached from cups, glasses, 850., of all sizes or diameters.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character possessing advantages in point of simplicity, durability, ease of attachment, and general efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cup with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view looking upwardly. Fig. 4 is a detail front elevation of the mustache-guard detached. Fig. 5 is a bottom view thereof.
Corresponding parts in the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the guard proper, constructed of any suitable material, and, preferably, in one piece. The inner edge of the guard is curved outwardly, and from said curved edge projects upwardly an undulating flange at, increasing in height from either end and having a depressed center a. Centrally at the outer edge of the guard is formed an approximately semicircular recess 13, from the curved edge of which the top surface of the guard recedes While the under surface is rearwardly beveled, the front or outer edge of the guard inclining slightly toward said recess.
The guard is provided upon the under side with a central projecting portion C, terminating at the front edge in two downwardly-extending lugs or flangesc 0, having rounded faces, said lugs being designed to engage the inner edge of the cup or other article when the guard is applied to the latter.
To retain the guard in place when applied,
I have provided two spring-armsD D, formed with coils (Z d. The arms D are secured at one end in the outer ends of the front edge of the guard, recesses d (1' being provided for the reception of the coils of the arms D. From the coils cl the arms D are turned inwardly and approximately parallel with the front edge of the guard. This latter portion of each arm projects slightly downwardly, the free ends being flattened, as shown at 01 and oppose the front faces of the lugs 0. Thus when the guard is applied to a cup or other article the lugs or flanges 0 rest against the inner edge thereof, (the ends of the guard projecting over the edge of the article,) while the spring-arms D will bear against the outside of the vessel. It will be obvious that in the foregoing construction only the lugs or flanges rest upon the inside of the vessel, in lieu of forming the outer surface to correspond with the circumference of a vessel of certain size, as has heretofore been the case, thus adapting thepresent invention to vessels of different diameters and shapes other than cylindrical.
I claim as my invention 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a mustache-guard provided at its rear edge with an upwardly-projecting flange and at its front edge with a recess, lugs or flanges projecting from the end edges of the latter and adapted to engage the inner surface of a cup or other article, and spring-arms adapted to bind against the outer surface of the latter, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture,
a detachable mustache guard having its ends adapted to project over the sides of a cup or other article, downwardly-projecting lugs or flanges adapted to engage the inner surface of such article, and spring-arms adapted to bind against the outer surface of the latter, said guard being provided with a recess be- Eween the lugs or flanges, substantially asset ort 1.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
