UNITED STATES PATENT OFEicE.
EDl/VARD LEMBERGER, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
ATTACHMENT FOR WRITING-DESKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,456, dated September 24, 1889.
Application iiled December 29, 1888. Serial No. 294,932. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD LEMBERGER, aveitizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Attachment for lVriting- Desks; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, .reference being had to the accom panyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an appendage for writing-desks of the character designed to contain a dampened sponge, a wiping-elotl1, and pen-holders, pencils, the., being especially adapted for school purposes.
The object of my invention is to provide an appendage that shall be inexpensive in construction, convenient to attach, and that shall form a convenient receptacle for the articles referred to, having especial reference to the sponge-receptacle and means for retaining the moisture therein.
In Letters Patent No. 887,082, granted to me July 81, 1888, I have described a device for containing a sponge, wiping-cloth, pen-holders, dac.; and the present invention is an improvement on the same.
The invention consists in the parts and com bination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a complete appendage. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the sponge-receptacle on line a' Fig. 2. Fig. 4t is a detail view of the telescopic top to the sponge-receptacle.
In the Letters Patent above referred to there is described and shown in connection with a suspended receptacle for pencils, the., a horizontal coil for the reception of a wiping-cloth and an open -top receptacle for sponge.
My present invention relates not only to lessening the expense of construction, but to an improved form of sponge-receptacle, whereby the sponge, when dampened, will retain the moisture for a considerable length of time.
A designates a wire bent at or near the center to form a hanger B for the reception of a screw or nail, by which to suspend the receptacle 'to the desk. The wires are separated at this point and bent in semicircular form, the wire C forming the portion of a semicircle at the right and the wire D the semicircle at the left side, respectively, the two nearly describing a circle, as indicated at E, into which is placed a cylindrical receptacle F, provided with overlapping edges G, which engage with the wires and suspend the receptacle therefrom, and into which is placed an inner sponge receptacle Ii", preferably of glass. Wire C is extended to nearly a semicircle, and is then turned at right angles and extended downwardly to a pointbelow the bottom of the sponge-receptacle, Where it is formed into a coil ll of a suitable diameter to receive a desired number of pen-holders, pencils, dsc., the bottom of the coil being closed by any suitable disk secured therein. lVire D forms substantially a semicircle, and is then formed into a depending coil l, preferably of greater diameter than coil II, and forms a convenient receptacle for a wipingcloth. y
K designates a cylinder of a diameter to allow the same to move easily within spongereceptacle F. The top of said cylinder is provided with foraminous covering K', preferably wire-gauze, for a purpose hereinafter stated.
In operation, the appendage being secured in proper position, a moistened sponge L is placed within receptacle F and the telescoping top K placed within the receptacle, the top K resting upon the sponge, and by the gravity thereof causing the fora-minous covering to press sufficiently upon the moistened sponge to require but a slight depression to cause the moisture to rise through the interstices when it is desired to dampen a cloth, and quickly rising from the depressed position by reason of the resiliency of the sponge. The covering K prevents to a great degree the evaporation of moisture in the sponge, thereby obviating the necessity of meistening the same as frequently as is necessaryin an open-top receptacle, as the weight of the top upon the sponge tends to close the pores ICO of the sponge, and thereby exclude air therevided Wit-h a teleseoping top portion having from. .a forarninous Covering, as and for the purpose What I claim, and desire to secure by Letset forth. ters Patent is- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 15 5 l. The herein-described appendage t0 a my own I hereby affix my signature in presdesk, consisting of two depending coils and ence of tWo Witnesses. a sponge-receptacle having a telesooping p0rtion provided With a foraminous covering, as EDWARD LEMBERGER' and for the purpose set forth.
