MATCH SAFE.
No. 599,398. Patented Feb. 22, 1898.

SOHUYLER MAXFIELD, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
MATCH SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,398, dated February 22, 1898.
Application filed May 5, 1897. Serial No. 635,123. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, SCHUYLER MAXFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloversville, county of Fulton, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in MatchSafes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements; and it consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 7
Similar letters refer to similar parts in both figures.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a central vertical longitudinal section of my improved matchsafe. Fig. 2 is a central vertical cross-section of the same. 7
A is the reservoir of my improved matchsafe, adapted to contain a supply of matches. The bottom walls of the reservoir converge downwardly to a bottom opening A, adapted to receive the driver B, which is in the form of an upright plate or standard fixed upon the base 0. The base has a telescoping connection with the reservoir, and the reservoir is supported in a raised position by means of the springs S, inclosed within the base. The driver is provided in its upper end with a groove B, adapted to form a seat for and receive the lowermost match in the reservoir when a downward movement is imparted to the reservoir against the force of the springs S. As the reservoir is depressed by the hand of a person desiring to extract a match therefrom the match which has gravitated to the lowest part of the reservoir at the apex of the converging bottom walls is received by the seat in the upper end of the driver and separated from the other matches, assuming an elevated position in the reservoir. The upper portion of the reservoir is provided with a lateral opening A of a size adapted to permit the free passage therethrough of a single match, which opening is located in the vertical plane of the match-seat in the driver,
but at a point above the normal position of such seat. On the opposite side of the reservoir I provide the plate-spring S which is attached to the inner wall of the reservoir and projects upwardly and inwardly therefrom into a position to engage the end of a match supported in the driver-seat when the reservoir has been depressed sufficiently to bring its lateral discharge-opening A into line with such match and to force such match through the dischargeopening and expel it from the reservoir. The spring can be bent to assume anydesired position and expel the match with greater or less force, as desired.
lVhen desired, the inner wall of the reservoir may be provided with a depression or groove A adapted to receive the end of the match and guide it into position to enter the discharge-opening. The expelled match may be permitted to fall upon a table or stand upon which the match-safe rests; but I prefer to attach to the base a receptacle D, adapted to receive the expelled match and support it in an accessible position. The receptacle D is also adapted to form a convenient depository for burned matches, cigar ends, &c. v
The safe can be provided with cigar-cutting mechanism, when desired, by forming an aperture 0 in the side wall of the base and fixin g to the reservoira knife 0 adapted to be moved past such opening when the reservoir is given reciprocating movements on the driver.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a match-safe, the combination with a driver having a match-seat in its upper end, of a match-reservoir reciprocatory upon the driver and provided with a lateral dischargeopening and a groove in its inner wall leading to said opening, and a match-expelling spring, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of April, 1897.
SOHUYLER MAXFIELD.
