UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAMALEX. HAMILTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
soAP DISH oR CUP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,499, dated October 8, 1889.
Application filed February 1, 1889. Serial No.. 298,317. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ALEX. HAM- ILTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Soap Dish or Cup, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a soap-dish that will be applicable either to a wall or sink bracket, or to a bucket or tub, as fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved soap-dish. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the wall socket or bracket which I prefer to use. Fig. .3 is a section of the soap-cup on the line l 2, Fig. 4:, adapted to the socket. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the soap-cup, showing its application to a bucket; and Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view showing one of the features of my invention.
A is the soap-cup, having abaseo of openwork' to allow for the escape of water, and having sides b b to retain the soap. The back d of the cup has a projection e at its upper end, from which depends a tapered lug c', which is adapted to iit in a depression fof the socket F, Fig. 2, the latter having three forwardlyprojecting steadying-lipstwo at the top, as at g g, and one at the base, as at 7L. These three lips bear against the back of the soap-cup, and with the lug e serve to hold the cup irmly in. place in the socket. j
On the under side of the soap-cup is secured a forked plate B, having arms c c projecting from the under side of the soap-cup in such a position that when the cup is applied to a bucket or tub, as shown in Fig. 4, they will, in connection with the luge', serve to hold the cup firmly upon the rim of the bucket or tub. The plate B is shown in Fig. 3 as secured by a screw, and it may have a slot c', as
shown in Fig. 5, to which is adapted a screw j, so that by loosening the screw the plate may be moved toward and from the bucket, in order that it may tit buckets of dierent sizes. A spring la may be inserted in the slot or located at the back of the plate, as shown respectively by full and dotted lines in Fig. 5, so as to adapt the plate for application to square-sided vessels, such as tanks or large tubs. The distance between the lug e and the back of the socket may be varied as circumstances suggest.
It will thus be seen that the soap-cup, although adapted for use with a sink or wall bracket or socket, can be removed therefrom and readily fastened to a bucket for use in scrubbing and other work.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the soap-cup having a projecting lip with a central depending lug and a removable plate provided with arms projecting beyond the under edge of the soap-cup, said projecting arms forming with the lug a support for the soap-cup when applied to a bucket or light receptacle, sub' stantially as described.
2. The combination of the soap-cup .having a lip with depending lug and a socket-piece having an orifice for the reception of the lug, and provided with projections at the top and base of said socket-piece, against which the cup rests, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the soap-cup with a lip having a central depending lug and a slotted adjustable plate removably secured to the under side of the soapcup, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the soap-cup having a central depending lug with a slotted adj ustable plate removably secured to the under side of the said soap-cup, and a spring to force the plate outward from the cup, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub scribin g witnesses.
WILLIAM ALEX. HAMILTON.
