To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID F. CURTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Holders for Paper Oups, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to metal holders for supporting and handling cups, dishes or re ceptacles formed of paper or other fragile material.
The object of my invention is to provide a holder having a removable shell rigidly secured in position in the body portion of the holder and adapted to snugly fit against and support the walls of a cup positioned in the holder.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims. 7

In the form shown in the drawings 1 is a holder of the usual or any preferred form of construction comprising a shell 2 and a base 3 formed integrally therewith or rigidly attached thereto for supporting said shell in position. A handle 4 is also shown rigidly attached to the side of the shell 2 for convenience in manipulating the holder. In the form shown the holder is substantially as used at soda fountains or the like adapted to-receive and support a glass cup or receptacle which is readily removed for cleaning or storage. My improvement consists in providing an inner wall or lining 5 preferably conical in form with the large end or base open end upward, the bottom or small end is also open as at 6 and adapted to hold a cup formed of paper or other fragile material in which the lining 5 snugly fits against the exterior walls of the cup to support the same in position and prevent injury or breakage of the cup when employed for holding any hard material or when a spoon or other implement is employed in the cup.
Any suitable means may be provided to rigidly maintain the lining 5 in position in. the holder 1 and prevent its movement when in service. As shown a plurality of projecting hooks or stops 77 are rigidly secured to the wall of the lining in position to engage the upper edge of the shell 1 to limit the distance the lining extends into the shell and to provide an accurate substantial bearing for the lining upon the shell.
A plurality of resilient fingers 8-8 are also rigidly secured to the outer wall of the lining 5 each suitably formed and adapted to extend beyond the lower edge of the lining and resiliently engage the base 3 to draw the lining 5 into the shell and the hooks 7 firmly down upon the upper rim of the shell thereby positively maintain the same in position.
In the form shown in Fig. 2 an annular flange 9 is provided upon the lining 10 in position to cooperate with the shell 2 in place of the hooks 7 otherwise my holder is the same as that shown in Fig. 1. In Fig. 3 the upper bearing upon the shell 11 is entirely omitted and the tapering wall of the lining fits snugly into the top of the shell, this construction is especially desirable where the shell 2 is unusually high or of small diameter, enabling the lining to extend farther into the shell and provide a rigid and very secure fastening.
In the form shown in Fig. 4: the various part-s are constructed substantially as hereinbefore described, except that the resilient fingers 8 for holdingthe lining in position in the shell are omitted and a pair of threaded rods 12-12 are provided for this purpose each rigidly attached to the lower. end of the lining substantially parallel to the axis thereof. A plate or bar 14 having suitable apertures 15-15 therein to receive the ends of the rods 12 is also provided and positioned in the base 3 with the ends of the rods 12 positioned in the openings 15 so that by screwing the nuts 16 onto the rods 12 the bar 14 may be drawn upward and engage the wall of the base with any desired pressure thus providing a very rigid and secure fastening for the lining in the shell and preventing the possibility of its accidental displacement.
Having thus described my improvement it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form or construction shown.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cup holder, comprising an exterior shell having a supporting base, in combination with a removable lining having a part positioned within said shell and adapted to engage a cup to hold the same in position in the shell, and means for maintaining said lining in position in the shell.
2. A cup holder, comprising an exterior shell having a supporting base, in combination with a removable lining having a part positioned within said shell and adapted to engage and accurately fit the exterior of the cup to hold the same in position in the shell, and means for maintaining said lining in position in the shell.
3. A cup holder, comprising an exterior shell having a supporting base, in combination with a removable lining having a part positioned within said shell and adapted to engage a cup to hold the same in position in the shell, and means upon the lining adapted to engage said shell to accurately control the position of said lining in said shell and means for maintaining said lining in position in the shell.
4;. A cup holder, comprising an exterior shell having a supporting base, in combination with a removable lining having a part positioned within said shell and adapted to engage a cup to hold the same in position in the shell, and resilient means for maintaining said lining in position in the shell.
5. A cup holder, comprising an exterior shell having a supporting base, in combination with a conical lining open at both ends having a part positioned Within said shell and adapted to engage and accurately fit the exterior of the cup to hold the same in position in the shell, and means for maintaining said lining in position in the shell.
6. A cup holder, comprising an exterior shell having a supporting base, in combination with a removable conical lining open at both ends having a part positioned Within said shell and adapted to engage and accurately fit the exterior of the cup to hold the same in position in the shell, means upon the lining adapted to engage said shell to accurately control the position of said lining in said shell and means for maintaining said lining in position in the shell.

A cup holder, comprising an exterior shell having a supporting base, in combina tion with a removable conical lining open at both ends having a part positioned Within said shell and adapted to engage and accurately fit the exterior of the cup to hold the same in position in the shell, means upon the lining adapted to engage said shell to accurately control the position of said lining in said shell and resilient means for maintaining said lining in position in the shell.
8. A cup holder, comprising an exterior shell having a supporting base, in combination with a removable lining having a part positioned within said shell and adapted to engage and accurately fit the exterior of the cup to hold the same in position in the shell, means upon the lining adapted to engage said shell to accurately control the position of said lining in said shell and means for maintaining said lining in position in the shell.
9. A cup holder, comprising an exterior shell having a supporting base, a combination with a removable lining having a part positioned within said shell and adapted to engage and accurately fit the exterior of the cup to hold the same in position in the shell, and resilient means for maintaining said lining in position in the shell.
10. A cup holder, comprising an exterior shell having a supporting base, in combination with a removable conical lining open at both ends having a part positioned within said shell and adapted to engage a cup to hold the same in position in the shell, and resilient means for maintaining said lining in position in the shell.
