JOHN T. POHLMAN, OF NEWV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
METAL TUG FOR HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,682, dated November 4, 1890. Application filed July 24, 1890- Serial No. 359,759. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. POHLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Metal Tug for Harnesses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a metal tug for harnesses of a simple and ornamental design, adapted to be readily attach ed to or disconnected from the harness-saddle and by pivotal connections therewith to permit the vibration of the shafts without oscillation of the saddle and consequent chafing of the back of the horse.
The invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of a metal supporting-strap, having the slotted pivot-socket, and the metal tug, having the T or toggle pivot adapted thereto, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side view of myimproved tug and supporting-strap as connected in operation. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of Fig. 1, viewed from the side next to the horse when in use. Fig. 3 is an end view of the supporting-strap shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are views of the supporting-strap and tug, illustrating the mode of attaching or connecting the said parts.
Referring to the drawings, A designates my improved tug, which is formed of malleable iron, brass, or other suitable metal, having the ordinary circular or elliptical opening B to admit the shafts of the vehicle. On the lower side of the tug A is a suitable depending eye l-l, formed integral therewith, for the attachment of the ordinary shaft-girt C. On the upper side of the tug A, and formed integrally therewith, is a vertical neck or shank D, provided at the upper end with opposite lateral trunnions e e, extending parallel with the shaft-opening B and forming with the said neck D a T-shaped toggle-head n. The supporting-strap F is formed of malleable iron, brass, or other suitable metal, and is of the same width as the tug A. In the lower part thereof is an opening or chamber g, extending through it in the direction of its width, as shown. The width of said opening 9 corresponds to the diameter of the trunnions, and
the height of the said opening or chamber or its dimensions lengthwise of the supportingstrap corresponds to the length of the togglehead n. Centrally on one side of the supporting-strap F is a vertical slot K, communicating with said chamber g, extending. from the lower end of the strap to the upper side of the opening g and corresponding in width to the diameter of the trunnion. Said slot is adapted to admit the toggle-head or trunnions into the opening g, as shown in Fig. 4:, and the said opening 9 is adapted to permit the said toggle-head to turn therein through a quarterrevolution as the tug A is turned from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that shown in Fig. 5, which will bring said toggle-head at right angles to the slot K, as shown" in said Fig. 5, and the toggle-head and trunnions will thus be toggled in the supporting-strap F. The lower side of said opening is made circular to receive and form bearings for the said trunnions e e,which, after the tug is turned to the position shown in Fig. 5, may be dropped down into said bearings, and the tug may then be swung 011 said trunnions down to the position shown in Fig.1, the slot K permitting the neck or shank D to swing, as described. The opposite side of the strap is slotted up a little way from the bottom to form a clearancespace m for the said shank to swing in when the tug is oscillated past a vertical plane lengthwise through the strap F. The upper part of the strap F has two rectangular apertures r- 1" formed therein, separated by a cross-bridge u, having a spur t at the back thereof, thus providing for the attachment of the saddle-strap,which may be passed through the apertures with the spur penetrating it, thus holding it in place. strap Fis fastened to the saddle-girt with the slot K toward the horse, and in operation the tug cannot be detached therefrom, except by being swung into a horizontal position toward the horse and then revolved aquarter-tnrn to a position shown in Fig. 4. The strap and the trunnions of the toggle-head form a hinged joint, which permits the shafts to swing without oscillating the saddle upon the back of the horse. By the peculiar construction of the toggle-head and trunnions and the strap having its pivot-chamber g adapted thereto the parts when attached are hinged together Said supportingwithout involving the use of a rivet or pivot-al piece.
The parts are simple in construction and can be readily polished, plated, and connected together, and may be cheaply and conveniently applied to harnesses old or new, and is of neat and ornamental design.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, 1&-
1. The combination of the metal tug provided on its upper side with a vertical neck or shank havinglateral trunnions in the plane of the shaft-opening forming a T-shaped togglehead, and the metal supporting-strap adapted for attachment to the harness-saddle formed with an opening or chamber in its lower part, having a central vertical slot opening fhereinto at the side and bottom thereof, adapted to admit the toggle-head of the tug into said chamber, the chamber corresponding to the said head and permitting the quarterturn thereof, having bearings at its lower side to support the toggle-trunnions,whereby they are retained in engagement with and hinged to the supporting-strap, as specified.
2. The combination of the metal tug provided on its upper side with a vertical neck or shank having lateral trunnions in the plane of the shaft-opening forming a T-shaped toggle-head, and the metal supporting-strap having eyes or apertures in its upperpart for attachment to the harness-saddle formed with an opening or chamber g in its lower part, having the central vertical slot K opening thereinto at the side and bottom thereof, adapted to admit the toggle-head of the tug into said chamber, the chamber corresponding to the said head and permitting the quarter-turn thereof, and having bearings at its lower side to support the toggled trnnnions, whereby they are retained in engagement with and hinged to the strap, as specified.
