Description

UNITED STATES PATENT Orrlcn.
1 WILLIAM A. WHITNEY, BYRON, ILLINOIS.
N EC K-YOKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,351, dated January 8,1895.
Application filed April 18, 1894! Serial'No. 5Q8,060- (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. WHITNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Byron, in the county of Ogle and Stateof Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a neck yoke center which will have a swivel connection with the neck-yoke, and the construction of a tip for holding the breast straps.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is
an end elevation of the center. front elevation. Fig. 3, is a vertical central section. Fig. 4., is a rear elevation. Fig. 5, is an inner face view of the base portion of the center. Figs. 6 and 7, are detailed views of the swivel connection of the pole socket with base. Figs. 8 and 9, show the construction of the tip.
To the neck yoke 1, at the center of its length is secured the base 2, by rivets ,3, extending through the parts. This base has a center portion extending therefrom, consist: ing of the ends 4, joined by a front 5, and leaving a vertical slot or opening 6, extending through the rear and bottom. A recess 7, is formed by the ends and front side, being of larger dimensions than the slot, having its bottom portion of semicircular form. A flange 8, extends around the slot or opening Fig. 2, is a a forming a broader wearing surface.
, The pole socket 9, is of an old construction having its inner surface leather lined. From this socket extends a shank 10, of cylindrical form and of such diameter as to readily move within the slot 6, of the base portion. The end of this shank is provided with an annular depression 11, and its extreme end with a head or enlargement 12.
The means for forming a connection between the shank portion of the pole socket and the base, consists of two semicircular sections 13, shown at Figs. 8, 4, 6 and 7, being of the end of the shank of the pole socket the shank will be'inclosed within the semicircular sections. These sections with the shank in position therein are placed within the recess '7, so that the shank will lie within the slot 6-. The base is then secured to the neck yoke when the parts will appear as shown in section at Fig. 3. By this connection the two sections are held within the recess, but free to turn therein, the limit of such movement beingthe extent of the movement of the shank of the pole socket in the slot, and the shank of the pole socket is free to turn in its connection with the two sections, thereby forming a universal joint connection be tween the pole socket and base, to allow for any variations of the pole. The flanges 8, present a greater wearing surface and ad ditional strength.
At Figs. 8 and 9, I have shown an improved tip or holder for the breast strap, consisting of a base 18, having perforations through which screws 19, pass to hold it in place on the neck yoke. Near one end of this base rise ears 20, having their ends perforated, and the base is lengthwise slotted a portion of its length. Between the ears 20, is pivoted a hook 21, by the pin 20, extending through the parts. This hook curves downward, and doubles upon itself a portion ofits length, and is seated within the slotted portion of the base.
In use the hook is turned to the position shown indotted lines, and the breast strap after being passed over the end of the neck yoke is placed within the hook, and the hook turned to its solid line position when the breast strap will lie in contact with the free arm of the hook and around the front portion of the neck yoke, and as the strain is continually pulling upon the strap it cannot become disengaged from the lock, until the hook is raised by hand. I This device forms a quick and safe manner of connecting the breast strap to the neck yoke, and saves unbuckling the strap.
I claim as my invention-- 1. In a neck yoke, the combination of a base portion, a pole socket having a headed shank and means for forming a connection between the base and socket, consisting of a two part bushing held by the base and by which the socket is supported.
2. Ina neck yoke, the combination of a base provided with a slotted extension, a pole socket provided with a shank, a two part bush ing located within the extension, having their meeting faces recessed and receiving the' shank.
3. In a neck yoke, the combination of a base provided with an extension slotted through its top, bottom, and rear sides, and having an en- I o larged recessed portion extending through the top, a cylindrical bushing in two lengthwise sections having their meeting faces recessed, a pole socket having a shank with an end conforming to the recessed faces of the bushing and located therein.
WILLIAM A., WHITNEY.
