NO. 194, ZZZ Batnterl Aug. I 14,1877

M, PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPMER,WASHINGTON, a c.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
ANDREW J. OLEMMONS, OF BURDETT, MISSOURI.
.IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-TONGUES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,222, dated August 14, 1877; application filed May 12, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that'I, ANDREW J. OLEMMoNs, of Burdett, in the county of Bates and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wagon-Tongues; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference be ing had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my wagon-tongue. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view, and Figs. 3 and 4 are details of the same.
My invention relates to wagon-tongues; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of a coupling for connecting the neckyoke to the tongue, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents a wagon-tongue, on the end of which is fitted a metallic socket, B, formed with two rearwardly-extending straps or arms, 0 G, lying close to the tongue, and fastened thereto by a pin, a, as shown, or otherwise, as may be desired. The socket B is closed at its end, and has a central hole, b, with a slot, b, extending upward from the same.
D represents the neck-yoke, which is pivoted by a pin, 61, between two arms or jaws, Gr G extending forward from a head, G. This head is provided with a rearwardly-extending shank or stem, G which has a lug,
h, on its side, as shown. The shank or stem G is passed through the hole binto the socket, the lug it going through the slot b when the head G is turned one-half around, which looks the parts together, the inner end of the shank G entering a longitudinal bore, 0, made in the end of the tongue, the lug h lying in the recess h.
The neck-yoke D is thus connected to the end of the tongue, as it were, by a swiveljoint, and can move or turn in all directions. It is easily and quickly attached and detached, as occasion may require, and is safer than when attached in the ordinary way, as the lines will not get caught on it, as is often the case. It is simple, cheap, and durable, and not liable to get out of order.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the tongue A, having the borec and circular recess h, and the socket B, having the central hole I), with the slot 11, of the head Gr, provided with the jaws G and shank G with lug h, and the neckyoke D, swiveled by the pin 6) in the recess between the jaws, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW JACKSON GLEMMONS.
