SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,261, dated November 20, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES PINKERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at O- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Line Attachments for-Hames, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to those line rings orloops which are attached to hames by means [0 of pins passed through the hames, and having eyes in which the rings are loosely hung. The objects of my invention are to simplify the construction of the ring-attaching devices, to render them stronger and more durable, and

to avoid danger of breakage by affording a more extended bearing for the line-ring on the hame.

The object of my invention I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of the top portion of a hame embodying my invention; Fig. 2, detail perspective views showing the parts detached; and Fig. 3, a detail view showing the interior of the ring-holding clip or shield plate.

In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail,referring to the drawings, wherein- The numeral 1 indicates part of a wooden hame having the usual strap-loops, 2. The line ring or loop 3 has its ends separated from but pointing toward each other and formed into cylindrical journals 4, which are adapted to turn in circular seats 5, formed on the inside of a clip or shield plate, 6, at opposite sides of a central perforation, 7, therein. The

clip or shield plate is provided at one side with a straight edge, 8, to bear against the edge of the hame and at the opposite side with an extension, 9, to bear upon the face of the hame. A rivet or pin, 10, having a head, 11, is in- 5 serted through the perforation 7 in the clip or shield plate and between the adjacent ends of the ring or loop 3, and is then passed transversely through the hame and upset or riveted,

as at 12. This construction secures the ends of the open ring or loop beneath the clip or shield, while the ring can swing laterally. The clip or shield is furnished with a cavity,

13, to form upper and lower internal shoulders.

14, and the extremities of the journal ends 4 of the ring or loop are provided with lateral lips 15 to engage behind said shoulders when the parts are applied, thereby securing the ring in a strong and substantial manner, while at the same time steadying it, but admitting of its lateral swinging movements. The space between the adjacent ends of the ring or loop is preferably just suificient to permit the passage of the pin or rivet 10, so'that the said ends will have a bearing against opposite sides of the pin. In case of a ring being broken a new one can be readily applied,while by the construction described I avoid the use of eyes on the pins or rivets and secure the ring beneath instead of outside of the clip or shield plate, the whole constituting a cheap, 0 durable, and efficient means of attaching linerings to hames. By having the ring divided and its ends bearing against the pin or rivet under the clip or shield plate the ring is steadied and prevented from rattling,and also 7 5 from moving vertically in the clip or shield.

What I claim is- The combination,with a hame, of a clip having two end bearings and a central recessed portion perforated for the rivet, an open or divided line-ring having lugs thereon, and with its separated ends arranged between the hame and the clip-plate, and the rivet securing the clip-plate and passing directly between the separated ends of the ring and extending transversely through the hame, substantially as described.
