Description

A (No Model.) A. G. MGLEOD.
HAME FASTENER.
No. 382,103. Patented May 1, 1888.
Ill I lllllll nmmmmunmnm wmw.
.Nrrn STATES ANGUS G. MGLEOD, OF
HALLOGK, MINNESOTA.
HAM E-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 382,103, dated May 1, 188 8.
Application filed February 8, 1888. Serial No. 263,324. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANGUS G. MeLEon, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Hallock, in the county of Kittson and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new auduseful Improvements in HameLocks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to hame looks or fast-;
eners, and has for its object to improve and simplify this class of devices, whereby their efficiency is increased and they are rendered more convenient of handling.
The improvement consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed, and shown in the drawings,in which- Fignre 1 is a front view of the lower portion of a pair of hames embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the fastener; Fig. 3, a bottom plan view of the hinged "clamp; and Fig. 4, a side view of the hinged clamp, showing it opened.
The fastener is composed, chiefly, of three parts, the clip A, the hinged clamp 13, and the connection or chain 0. The clip is a short plate having hooks a and a, one at each end, respectively, and having an opening, a", and a slot, a at one end only. The slot at extends part way around the hook and is enlarged at its upper end, of, to permit the chain C to pass through it freely at this point when adjusting the chain to the distance between the hames. \Vhen the chain is properly adjusted, a link thereof is dropped into the narrow portion of the slot a and is held from longitudinal displacement by the adjacent link of the chain, which sets crosswise of the said slot, as will be readily understood.
The hinged clamp is composed of two parts, plate D and lever D. The plate D has its end (1 bent substantially at right angles and has the lever pivoted to the end'of d,'the end of said lever D extending past the pivot at right angles to D and bent to form the hook d, which extends in an opposite direction to d. The free end of Dis bent to bear against D when closed, and has an opening, d, through which a turn-button or catch, E, pivoted to D, extends to hold the lever against accidental displacement. The opening at is extended at one end, and the head of the catch Eis correspondingly extendedlaterally to fit and pass through the said extension of (2 to be partially turned about the axis of E and hold D against D.
The chain 0 is fastened at one end to the plate D and at its other end to A in the eye c and serves to connect B and A and ad nst thedistance between then1 to correspond with the distance between the ends of the hames. Then the chain 0 is-properly adjusted, the hook a of A. is slipped through the eye or ring f at the end of one of the hames, and the lever Dis opened, as shown in Fig. 4,and passed through the eye or ring f at the end of the other hame, and closed upon D in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The herein-described hame lock or fastener, composed of the clip having ahook at each end and a slot at one end, the upper end of the slot being enlarged, the hinged clamp consisting of the plate having one end bentsubstantially at right angles and having a turn button at its other end, and the lever having of the plate, the hook extending in an opposite direction to the said bent end of theplate, the other end of the lever having an opening to receive the said catch, and the chain connected at its end with the clip and the said clamp and passing through the said slotin the clip, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combinationmvith the clamp and the chain, of the clip having a hook at each end and a slot at one end, which slot extends around the hook and is enlarged at one end, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the plate D, having the bent end d, and the lever having the hook d, pivoted to the end of d, of the catch or turn-button E, pivoted to D and adapted to pass through an opening in the free end of D,
purpose described.
In testimony whereof Iaffix mysignatureln presence of two witnesses.
