Description

(No Model.)
A. D. NORTON. DOOR SEOURER.
No. 436,940. Patented Sept. 23,1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAM DUANE NORTON, OF DELTA, IDAHO TERRITORY.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,940, dated September 23, 1890.
Application filed April 24, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAM DUANE NORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delta, Shoshone county, Idaho Territory, have invented an Improvement in Door-Fasteners; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to the class of doorfasteners; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device for fastening doors, one which can be carried about by a person and readily applied when needed, and as easily removed and carried off when the occasion for its use is past.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of m y fastener. Fig. 2 is a View showing its application.
A is a bar, which may be termed the bod ybar. One end is provided with teeth a. To its other end is hinged the brace-bar B, the outer end of which has teeth or prongs b. To the back of the body-bar is hinged the holding-bar O, one end of which is curled at c to form a proper bearing-surface. All these bars are to be made of metal and can be in as ornamental a form as desired, and may be nickel-plated or otherwise polished.
To use the fastener, proceed as follows: Hold the door D open a little with one hand and with the other introduce between the edge of the door and the face of the casing the body-bar A, with its teeth toward the easing. In this position the holding-bar should be straight up and down, so as to permit the Serial No. 349,320. (No model.)
proper insertion of the body-bar, and the brace-bar is bent back out of the way. Now close the door tightly. This will have the elfec t of firmly binding the body-bar between the door and casing, the pressure sinking the teeth a into the casing so that said bar will be held tightly in place. Now turn the holding-bar on its pivot so that its bearing end-c will come up and bear tightly against the door. Then bring up the hinged brace-bar B as tightly as possible, its forked or toothed end bearing against the inner surface of the casing. This will cramp and firmly hold the body-bar and tighten a l the parts, so that the door will be firmly locked.
The whole device is simple and small enough to be portable, so that a person can always have with him a means for securing his door.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved door-fastener consisting of the body-bar A, having teeth upon its inner end, a brace-bar hinged to the outer extremity of the body-bar and having its free end formed with prongs, and a holding-bar O, pivotally secured to the body-bar independently of the hinge-j oint and at a point between said joint and the'inner end of said body-bar, said holding-bar having an axial movement and having one end curved to form a bearing-surface, as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ABRAM DUANE NORTON.
