Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,617, dated December 27, `1859.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, C. RICE, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stair-Carpet Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part `oftliis specification, in which- Figure l, is a front view of my invention as it appears when in use. Fig. 2, is a lateral view of that portion of my fastener which may be detached from the stairs.

Figs. 3, 4, and 5, are perspective, lateral and back views of those parts of my invention which are fixed permanently to the stairs.

The construction and operation of my invention I will now explain:

I make the main-piece of the saine (a, Fig. 1,) either plain or ornamental as to design-of any proper metal or combinationV of metals and of any proposed size-the latter being dependent upon the width of the stairs. Upon the inner side of the said main-piece, I construct at a 4short distance from'the end a hook,7 (b, Fig.` 2,) and at the other end and upon the saine side of the main-piece at a `distance far enough from the extreme end to permit of its being readily worked I attach a springbolt, x, (Fig. 2) furnished with a thumbpiece, e. Then upon one side of the carpet-way, and in (or near) the inner angle of the step I securely screw the eye c Fig. 3,) and upon the opposite side of the carpet-way, also in or near the inner angle aforesaid and at such a distance from the eye c, as will correspond to the distance of the spring-bolt a', from `the hook b of the main-piece, I screwin` and 5.
