Description
(No Model.)
W. H. MUSHAM. COMBINATION TOOL.
gatented July y UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM HENRY MUSI-IAM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 432,323, dated July 15, 1890.
llpplicationlcd April 29, 1890. Serial No. 349,934. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM HENRY MU- SHAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in t-he county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Hose-Strap, Belt, Spanner, and Plug-VVrench, of which the following is a specication.
This invention has for its object to provide a combination-tool for the use of firemen capable of subserving many different uses which have heretofore required the employment of as many different devices, and which also is of convenient form and size and of such character that it may at all times be carried upon the person of the iireman. This object is 0btained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents my invention in use as a hose-strap for holding a lead of hose upon a ladder'. Fig. 2 shows the tool detached from the carrying-belt and in side elevation;v
Fig. 3, an edge View thereof; and Fig. 4, a perspective view showing the tool attached to a strap, converting the same into the belt.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring by letter' to the accompanying drawings, A indicates the body of the tool, the lower end of which terminates in an eye B for the attachment of a strap C, and the upper end terminates in a hollow head D, the hole in which at the rear side of the body, as shown at E, is square, triangular, or polygo-V nal in cross-section for reception of the stem of a water-plug, thereby enabling' the employment of the tool as a plug-wrench, while the hole at the opposite end E is circular to receive one of the bosses upon the hose-coupling, which thus enables the employment of the tool as a spanner for screwing together the pipe-couplings, the. body portion of the tool toward the upper end thereof being curved, so as to substantiallycorrespond with the periphery of the hose-coupling.
About the center of length the body is provided with a right-angular arm F, which constitutes a hook for attaching the tool to the round of a ladder, or for engaging a ring G upon the opposite end of the strap C, and by reason of the rectangular form of the notch 'or throat of the hook the tool is adapted to be employed as a wrench for removing the cap of the fire-plug nozzle.
y In the practical use of this combinationtool it is either permanently or detachably secured to one end of the strap C, which is provided at the opposite end with the ring or eye G, so that the strap may be worn by the fireman as a belt, as illustrated in Fig. 4, the tool in this case subserving the purpose of a buckle, so that the liremen, Without any inconvenience, are enabled to always carry the toolvwith them, ready for use when needed, either as a plug-wrench, spanner, or as a hose-strap for securing a lead of hose to a ladder, in which latter case the belt is re moved from his waist and the tool passed through the ring on the end of the strap, so as to make a loop upon the hose, after which the hook is caught over a convenient round of the ladder, and the hose will then be safely held in place without being permanently secured, as would be the case in the employment of the ordinary strap and buckle.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. A combination-tool composed of a strap and a spanner and plug-wrench, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A combination-tool comprising the body portion A, the eye B in one end, the spanner E near the other end, and the angular arm F, projecting from near the middle of the body portion and constituting a plug-wrench and hook, substantially as described.
3. A combination-tool comprising the body A, the eye B in one end of said body, the head D at the opposite end of said body, constituting the wrench-socket F. and a hole F. for the boss on the ring of the hose-coupling, and the angular arm F, projecting from near the middle of the body, substantially as described.
i. Acombination-tool comprising the body A, terminating at one end in the eye B and at the opposite end in a hollow head D, constitutin g a Wrench-socket E and a hole E for the boss on the ring of the hose-coupling, the angular arm F, branching from said body about the center' of length thereof, and a strap secured at one end to the eye B and thereof, constituting a hook, and a strap sehaving the ring G attached to the opposite cured to said loop at onc end and hnvmg :L 1o
end thereof, substantially as described. ring attached to opposite end thereof, sub- 5. A combination-tool comprising the body stantially as described. 5 portion A, terminating at one end in a strap WILLIAM HENRY MUSIIAM.
