JWAWM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' I Specification of Letters, Patent.
Patented Sept. 11, 1906.
Application filed February 28, 1906. Serial No. 303.362.
T0 ctZZ wh0mit may concern.-
Be it known that I, MICHAEL JOHN LovETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Firemans Belt, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to appliances-for the use of firemen; and the objects of my im provement are to provide means for conveniently and safely carrying implements such as axes, Wrenches, &c., to provide means by which the fireman may secure himself to a ladder or other object, to provide means for carrying the fire-hose and persons rescued from burning buildings, and to provide a device for various utility in the firemans work. These objects I attain by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 an edge view.
Similar reference-numerals refer to similar parts throughout both the views of the drawmgs.
The belt 1 is a strap made, preferably, of leather and is provided at one end with a hook 2 and at the other end with a buckle 8. A considerable portion of the belt is provided with holes for the tongue of buckle 8. The strap is looped, as shown in Fig. 2, and the end carrying hook 2 passes through buckle 8, so as to form the loop 13, which may be adj usted to size by putting the tongue of buckle 8 in different holes in the strap. A ring 4 is strung on the portion of the strap forming 1s secured to strap 1, preferably rigidly, by
- means of rivets. Adjacent to hook 3 is sethe loop 13 adjacent to buckle 8. A hook 3.
sired, hook 2 may be used in ring 4, as indi- 1cated by the dotted lines, to form an open oop.
The use of the belt .will now be readily understood. Loop 13 may be thrown over the shoulder or arm, and loo 14 may be passed around the fire-hose, hoo ed into ring 5, and the loop drawn up tightly upon the hose, so that the hose may be carried from the shoulder or arm. While the belt is in this position, also if the fireman is upon a ladder, he may secure hook 3 upon one of the rings of the ladder and secure himself, so that he may use both hands while standing upon the ladder. Hook 3 may also be used for security and suspension from any other convenient stationary object. The firemans ax is placed in loop 6, whence it may be taken whenever required. In snap -hook 9 is placed a spanner for operating the hosecouplings. Loop 13 may also be placed about the waist, if desired. When a person is to be rescued from a burning building and the descent must be made by a ladder or fireescape or other such means, loop 14 may be passed about the body of the person to be rescued and hook 2 inserted into ring 4, so that loop 14 does not close up too tightly. The fireman may thus conveniently carry another person and have the full use of both of his hands to descend the ladder or other means of escape.
Having thus described my invention, so that any one skilled in the art pertaining thereto may make and use it, I claim A firemans belt, comprising a strap provided with a hook at one end, a buckle at the other end, a hook in proximity to the buckle, a snap-hook for holding a wrench, a loop for holding an ax, a ring between the first-named hook and the buckle, and a ring 011 the loop limited by the buckle, substantially as specified.
